I haven't tried to play PVP but I can say you do have to link your Xbox live account to steam to play co-op. That said I was still able to play with a 10 year expired account.

Well, I just downloaded it so it looks like I'm playing Campaign

 

A long time ago when I worked for Time Warner, I was responsible for the International Accounts Receivable system. My users were all at the TW office in Amsterdam. This was before the internet became popular and conference calls were crazy expensive. I got to fly to Amsterdam and stay for a few days each year to visit with my users to see how they were interacting with the system. I've had some good times in the Netherlands. It is an incredibly clean place. TW would put me up in the American Hotel (pictured) when I would visit.
