Yeah, so fak you LBJ bolts. Seriously. Now maybe its the damn knuckle I used (not my original 2WD PreRunner knuckles), who knows. Damn bolt snapped off while before hitting the torque value. A mere 59 ftlbs. New bolts straight from toyota. So now I get to figure out how to salvage this knuckle that I just pressed in a new OEM hub/bearing/etc. @SpikerEng - FYI for your study/thread. These were bolts 90119-10933 for use with the dust cover. No loctite applied.

Was all done with the front half of the swap and was wrapping up with torque spec. Super pissed right now. :censored::bananadead:

EDIT: Photos added of the carnage. Makes me want to order new bolts all over again from a different supplier. These came from Toyota Colorado Springs. Not saying they are crap, I like their parts department. Just going to go with a different batch.

I do think I can save it though. Going to pull it off the vehicle tomorrow and then pull the LBJ. Hopefully can grab onto what left of that broken mess and remove it.

    upload_2022-9-28_18-40-11.jpg

EDIT 2: Pulled the ball joint and the steering knuckle off the vehicle. Amazed I didn't need anything to remove the remainder of the bolt. Unscrewed the remaining half easily. Weird.

Same thing happened to me once with a brand new OEM bolt. In one of the mounting holes in the spindle that doesn't go through, luckily got the broken half out with needle nose pliers.

I think it broke off right at the surface. Don't even want to take the damn knuckle off the truck. So tired but its going to bug the hell out of me until I do. I don't think I can tap it out either, right?

Captured washer bolts are 37ftlbs. Spike just did a test on lbj bolts.

OMFG. My fault. Rushing and look what happens. Actually, I had a stack of screen caps from FSMs with me and looks like two different specs. Hell, I even commented in his thread the other day before I installed the LBJs and mentioned the 37ftlbs and also attached a screenshot. Unbelievable. At least now I know it wasn't the bolt but as usual ---- USER ERROR.

Thanks for mentioning it, feel better knowing what happened.

@SpikerEng - Confirmed torque exceeding 37ftlbs on 90119-10933 will definitely produce a failure :anonymous:

Damn, if that's the case I feel lucky of all the times I've torqued mine to 59 that I've only broken one.

If you aren't using the boot protector and its not the black bolt w/washer, you're OK. If it is that black bolt w/washer, I'd be ordering 8 new ones asap and swapping them out. Anything over 37 is going to cause stress on those threads (as he detailed in his thread).

This is the one that snapped. It was bugging the hell out of me so I just finished backing out the remaining 7. The driver side was at 37 - was nowhere near as tight as the passenger side. Still, going to replace all of them. Just don't want to risk it.

And mine, shit both on the 4R and Tacoma.

The LBJs on that 4R were removed more than a handful of times.

I was on a trip once and had some bolts fall out because I wasn't torqueing or using thread locker. Installed some new ones, torqued and thread locker and 2 days later I broke them. Thinking the over torque may have been the issue looking back.

Because of the gap on the LBJ, it should be easy to remove the rest of the bolt once you seperate the LBJ from the spindle. I think I have always torqued mine to 43 per my Clymers (I know not FSM :bananadead: but it's handy to keep in the truck on big trips) with blue loctite.

Also grab a bottle of this:

    https://www.amazon.com/DYKEM-PINK-T...sprefix=cross+check,automotive,83&sr=1-7&th=1

I think it was @jubei who told me about it. I use it on all important bolts, and to check if my alignment cams have moved.

Thx for the product link, will definitely give it a try. Was actually going to use a paint pen to mark them but this looks like a cleaner approach.

I've decided to skip on the loctite this time around simply because there is no reference anywhere from toyota that mentions applying threadlocker to the LBJ bolts. Even the service bulletin doc from the recall campaign doesn't mention this in the tech procedure when replacing.
Going to :fingerscrossed: and send em on there way.

    EDIT: +1 for more colors

    Specified torque ratings are "dry"

    Need to adjust for "wet"

Mine never had the LBJ cap thing so I always sent them to 59ft-lbs. Didn't think that cap would make a difference but glad I don't have one now. What's the point of that cap

The difference is the physical bolt, that cap was added the same year they changed the bolt

You can install either bolt with or without the cap bit the torque for that bolt should be the torque that bolt in particular should have (37?) or 59

I know this info but still impact mine on and have no problems

Think there's a part number for landcruiser Prado bolts and another for hilux bolts but don't quote me

This is more like a gel almost, kinda hard to describe. It dries like a solid so like you can see it physically "break" if things loosen up. And yeah tons of colors, some race teams torque things with multiple colors for multiple values or types of torque. Can get really creative with how you keep up with your stuff.
