    Well, I went nuts yesterday, prompted by Aero Precision's site wide 15% off sale. I went ahead and bought my handguard, gas tube, and charging handle. I would have got my adjustable gas block but it was out of stock, dammit. However, I didn't stop there. I went almost all in and got a Tromix .458 SOCOM bolt and a Silencerco three chamber ASR muzzle brake (the silencerco Hybrid 46M supressor screws onto the muzzle brake) and a set of timing shims since the brake will be pinned and welded to the X-caliber 14" barrel I'm planning on getting. The only reason I didn't order the barrel which they say has a 3+ month lead time is they offer two gas block journal lengths and I'm not sure which one I'm going to need. Waiting for AP to get back to me on that.

    So I'm now shy a butt stock, a barrel and a gas block before I can complete this build and have hog (read: home invader) hammer.

    @allenfab I'll have to let you try it out. It won't have the range of your .308, but it'd be perfect for brush hunting for hogs.

    Just pulled the trigger on my 14.5" .458 SOCOM Barrel. It should be here just in time for Christmas. 12-14 week lead time...o_O

    Now I just need AP to get my gas block back in stock and get the butt stock, but I guess there's no rush there, lol. Other than the fact that I want to modify the butt pad on the butt stock to a nice thick cushy triple magnum butt pad. The bolt action .45-70 carbine I shot was about the same as a 12 GA, so the .458 SOCOM on an AR platform might be a little more gentle once I get the gas system adjusted right and maybe put a heavier buffer in it.

    Oh, yeah, and I need to check out the EOTech holo-sight with the green reticule. One reviewer said the green was hard to see, but I see green pretty good...better than red, anyway. If it doesn't look that great, I think I'm going to go with a Primary Arms prism sight. It works even if the batteries go dead.

    I didn't know they came in green. Cool. I had just saw some videos where they were using them as back up sights and mentioned they work even if the battery was dead, and I thought that would be a good feature to have if the SHTF. Of course, in that case, .458 SOCOM ammo would likely be hard to come by, but I could always transfer it to my AR15 5.56x45 or my shotgun.

    The green is or was a little harder to come by. Exactly still have a reticle with no batteries it cr2032 batteries if I recall with crazy hours and with my astigmatism you can adjust the optic for a crisp image.Sunlight or green background doesn't effect it. I have a couple of batteries in my grip. Oh and technically you really don't need back up sights either since you really never loose your optic when the battery is dead. Just my two cents

    Right. I can't do iron sights anymore since I wear trifocals. The sight picture is just too distorted, so I have to use some kind of optic. It's amazing how much my groups even at 10 yards tightened up when I put the reflex sight on my pistol and I was still able to keep most of the shots around center mass doing rapid fire at 25 yrds. Not anywhere as fast and accurate as Jerry Miculek but fast enough that the RO was keeping a close eye on me and then gave me a thumbs up.

    I think I misstated when I called it a backup optic. I think it was a CQB secondary optic in conjunction with a long range primary optic.

    It's starting to look like Tampa's anti-hurricane charm is starting to take effect. We are still in the outer west edge of the cone but it looks like Ian will be making landfall on the southern west coast and heading up through Lakeland. Thoughts and prayers for all in it's path.

    On a lighter note, I guess I won't be getting my Christmas present this year--at least not at Christmas. X-Caliber sent me a shipment notification today. I don't know how I managed it, but it seems they got my barrel done a lot faster than their stated 12+ weeks of lead time. I hope AP has my gas block available soon or I might have to look at other options.

    Hopefully things won't go pear-shaped and they won't end up delivering the barrel to a leveled lot. o_O

    :fingerscrossed::pray:

    @allenfab Hey, brother, did you say you had a tig setup now? I'm going to need to pin and weld my muzzle brake on to be legal and it's stainless. Not sure if it matters or not being as it's basically a glorified tack weld.

    Cool, thanks! I'll get with you when I get all the parts. I'm going to have to have the barrel nut and the gas block on the barrel before permanently installing the muzzle brake since they won't go around the brake. I have the barrel nut, just need the gas block.
