Jba headers making weird sounds on acceleration

Put on a set of jba headers on my 3.4 taco took 9 hours for what I would call a perfect install but... Even though I took my truck to my trusted exhuast mech for exhuast leak check and everything passed flying colors my truck sounds like I have an exhaust leak, even though things are completely torqued ! My question is could there be a exhaust leak under load only sometimes? Is this a rattle that may need to be found on a dyno cause it won't rattle or make a leak noise unless the engine is under load... I checked every bolt on the whole truck for looseness still no fix.. It happens around 2000-3500 rpm under load anyone have this happen with there bolt on jba headers ? Thanks for any help Im losin hair over this. + forgot to mention it comes from the driver side mainly where jba has you removing permanently the return throttle cable support, so I secured the cable very well so it won't rattle ( very confused ) and don't like grease monkey pos mechanics to look at my truck so I need dire help. really easy diagnostic...seafoam your taco and see if you see any smoke leaking out...

might help to have someone cycle your throttle while you watch

 

So is it a rattling (like sheet metal ?) or maybe it sounds like a "tick", most exhaust leaks I've encountered sounded like more of a ticking sound

or sometimes it'll sound like a rapid release of air, depends on leak, try crawling underneath your truck with a good light & carefully check each flange, each connection, wherever connection surfaces are look closely for sooty black (or white) blowouts around where surfaces meet, if you find these more than likely this will be the location....

 

I'll look harder for a leak and I'll try seafoam and see if smoke comes out , Ive had exhaust leaks before and it sounds like a leak but it sounds also like a rattling exhaust shroud but the exhaust shrouds/covers have been checked for tightness it's a tappin/rattle + do I need to change plugs after seafoaming it?

 

I've never seafoamed but yeah you'll have to change plugs cause they're gonna pick up alot of shit getting loosened up ...

 

maybe there is a warp in the header around a flange not allowing it to make sufficient contact with the gasket.

 

yep, wouldn't be the first time aftermarket headers did this....

 

Another thing you might want to check is when I added some headers to a Mustang I had a few years back, after the install it sounded like I had a leak. We put it back on the lift checked every nut and bolt and found out the "leaking" sound I heard was actually the sound of 1.) more exhaust gases flowing 2.) the headers were a light weight aluminum header and the metal was thinner so you could "hear" it easier. Make sense?

 

I see what you guys are saying It might just be me overanalizing it might be the sound of more flow under load resonating off of the engine bay,( all the bolts are torqued to spec) so the last step would be to upgrade the head to header gaskets with the copper embossed gaskets from summit..Well see what it is this weekend as soon as the gaskets come in. Thanks!

 

I just unsealed the DT headers and like the guy above said there us an odd sound that may be more flow. I have checked all bolts, flanges, and gaskets all are good even had a Toyota tech look at them. Sound is still there

 

I have the same problem. Just installed JBA short headers and exhaust, and under load/acceleration there's a ticking noise that is driving me crazy. The exhaust sounds awesome, but the tick....not so much.

I've read a couple possible areas that are to blame. 1) it's the normal ticking noise coming from the heads and the new headers are funneling that noise through the tubes louder than the stock manifolds did, or 2) there's a leak somewhere. Does anyone have any insight on this ticking BS from JBA?

 

Mine does the same thing. I traced it down to a valve on mine. Its not leaking it just the way i have my head set up from the machine shop. Heads are setup for a supercharger.

Check your valve clearance to be sure. I did mine was ok.
