I have a coworker friend who is from Romania.
I'll have to show this to him.
He is planning on retiring back to Romania in the next couple of years. He has property there and will probably do pretty well.
We did talk about cars recently and he said he had a Renault there; didn't like the Eastern European cars.

I saw this clearly gray market Land Rover Defender while walking around Rockport; I am pretty sure that it was sold new somewhere in Europe, but obviously not the UK because it's LHD. I do believe that Massachusetts requires emissions testing for diesel vehicles newer than a certain year, but MA is also nowhere near as strict as California and I was surprised to see that this rig had Monta plates. I'm guessing that this Defender 110 is somewhere in the range of 1993-1997, and the owner probably registered it in Montana to circumvent the excise tax in MA...

I actually ran the license plate through Carfax and it's clearly a foreign VIN. The report doesn't even give a year, make, or model. However, the Carfax report also shows that the first US title was issued in Vermont, in 2002... o_O

The Defender 110 (originally called simply the Land Rover Defender 110) debuted as a 1984 model, which means that the oldest examples wouldn't have been legal here in America until 2009). This particular one looks a lot newer than 1984, and I believe it's probably early to mid nineties as mentioned above. The Defender 110 debuted in America in 1993 and was only offered that year; I have no idea how this particular one made its way to Vermont in 2002 when there's no way in hell it would have been legal then...

This rig has the "Defender" badging, indicating that it is no older than 1990. The Carfax report also implies that it was brand new when titled in Vermont for the first time, with just 460 miles on the odometer. At this year's Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals, I saw a 2006 Citroen with New York plates. A 2006 anything from Europe will not be legal for import into the USA until 2031. The car's owner somehow managed to get it titled and registered as a 1995, thus making it legal in America under the 25-year loophole. How the hell it even got into America in the first place is confounding, but my guess would be that somebody brought it into Canada (where it became legal in 2021) and then down south into New York; I will post pictures of the Citroen in the very near future!

Another benefit of MT is they issue permanent tags on vehicles older than 11 years.

I would bet a pretty penny a thorough investigation would prove funny business with how that thing was registered. Pretty bold to just leave it sitting outside. Cool find.

All it needs is a diesel Discovery 1 parked next to it. Preferably with "Camel Trophy" written on the side and painted sandglow yellow.

I say more power to them. The government really has no right to tell people what they can and cannot drive in my opinion...

    Damn that’s clean.

I almost purchased a 1996 D90 until I drove it. That v-8 was gutless. My 1999 Tacoma was more powerful.

Would love to know how they got it registered stateside when it technically wasn't legal...

The woman who owns the bar where I used to work has a yellow 1994 D90 with the V8 you speak of and a 5-speed manual tranny. I believe it's a GM-derived engine and it makes 175hp, so yes your '99 Tacoma is more powerful. I'm guessing the one you drove had a slushbox automatic?
