By 2018, there were three people named Sam in life. One of my bosses was named Samantha, my other boss was named Samuel, and both went by Sam. Then, there was a cute blonde girl named Samantha as well. The first Samantha was the general manager of Puck, and the other Samantha was a bartender and server. To tell them apart, we called the GM "Big Sam" and the bartender "Little Sam"...

I thought this made no sense, since they were both the same size. Sure, my boss was about 4 years older than the other Sam, but it still made no sense. I took to calling them "Asian Sam" (my boss, who is half Korean) and "Blonde Sam"...

So, around the time I started working at Puck, Blonde Sam acquired a 1997 Jeep Wrangler for next to nothing. It was a 4-cylinder/5-speed and she ultimately had to get rid of it like five years ago because the body rotted out and it wouldn't pass inspection; I was impressed that Sam could drive a stick shift, as most of my friends her age (she was born in 1992) could not!

So, I asked Sam if the 1997 Jeep had A/C, and she said it did have A/C but it didn't work. One day, Sam was busy bartending and realized she'd left her cigarettes in her Jeep. She couldn't leave the bar, so she told me exactly where in the Jeep her smokes were; I went to the Jeep and glanced at the HVAC controls when I grabbed the cigarettes, and quickly found out why the A/C didn't work...

The first thing I said to Sam when I handed her the cigarettes was "Sam, the reason the A/C in your Jeep doesn't work is because it doesn't have A/C!" She and her husband moved to Florida in 2021, and I regularly poked fun at her for not realizing that her budget shitbox didn't have A/C. 1997-2006 Jeep Wranglers equipped with A/C have a little snowflake symbol on the controls, which Sam's lacked, and that's how I knew...

 

In about 2015, another one of my coworkers at the bar had a 2009 Nissan Maxima with over 100K miles on it and a bad A/C compressor, and this POS wasn't paid off yet. Sometimes I really do not realize how good I have it, considered that my dad bought me brand new truck 13 years ago and just signed the title over to me, no questions asked. My 1996 Nissan Pathfinder was a beast, but then Nissan went the CVT route and their quality dropped; I forget what was said, but my coworker made a wiseass remark about my Tacoma that I can't remember. I said "Well, at least my truck is paid off and has working A/C!" He never dissed my truck again.

I would buy a reliable shitbox in cash before I financed something five years old or older, but I know a lot more cars than the average person and also know people who can give me a deal.

By reliable shitbox, I mean a 20-year old 5-speed Corolla with A/C and less than 150K miles, which even in today's market can be had for relatively cheap.

 

Apparently, an unwritten rule of the "Bro Code" is to never talk shit about somebody else's vehicle when yours is still owned by the bank...

 

I liked the Frontier rental I had last summer..not sure if CVT or not off my head, I kinda think not though? If I didn't want to stay with Toyota it would be in the mix, though not the DCSB config I had. Had some giddyup to it but the V6 was a little more thirsty than my Tacoma.

Haha..nice one putting him in his place. Never understood why people have to be assholes about someone's vehicle.

Or maybe just don't talk shit in the first place, at least if you aren't close with the person. My friends and I have all given the elbow now and then to each other.

A friend of a friend once said something that pissed me off. My 86 Chevy Celebrity really was a POS but it was paid for and I was a college student. A bunch of us went out one night and he ended up riding in my car with a couple of other people. As we were all getting out and meeting some other people a girl asked if it was his, he laughed and said "you think I'd drive a shitbox like this or even be seen in it?" Douche. I politely informed the lady "yeah, he has a pretty sweet Mustang, maybe he'll drive it tomorrow..oh that's right, he doesn't have a license!" (guy had got busted about 3 months prior).

As we all got ready to leave he walked to my car and I said "yes?" He said "come on, open the door". Me "well no I wouldn't want to embarrass you in a shitbox like this remember" and left.
