Buddy has one I have a decent amount of time behind. It's neat but pretty underwhelming once you get past the novelty. The ammo availability alone is enough to make me stay away from buying one first hand.

It's just .308 scale 300BLK, and you'd honestly be better off just buying .300blk for the accessability. Neat to see people take on new ideas though, KB's personality aside.

Not hating at all but respectfully asking what do you actually do with them as a civilian? Night hunt? Do your best Buffalo Bill impression? Seems mostly like a $10,000 toy from what I’ve gathered.

Once again not hating but I’ve heard several folks say NVG is a game changer but they never elaborate why or how they use them.

Don’t get me we wrong it’s cool as hell. Maybe I’m missing something? If not “because I want it” is also more than adequate justification to me.

    They do nothing with them.

Maybe hit the flat range with them, and pig or coyote hunt.

I’m not a civilian, and my personal pair sits on my shelf next to my mich helmet which is more of a Iraq deployment relic that’s been updated probably 3 times over to date, and below that is a plate carrier full of all the things. It’s great if I need it, but at home in the US and in a non-duty capacity, non-training status, I haven’t…so far.

However, the same question/reasoning exist for AR-15s, if you follow the 2As constitutional meaning. A reason to have them, or at least the opportunity to have them is because you government does…

I didn't go the NVG route, choosing to go the thermal route instead. In my case, I live on a farm in rural TN. We live far enough out so almost all sorts of wildlife wanders through my yard at one point or another. I coop my property, so my fields are maintained. The gentleman whom I've coop'd with keeps 25 head of beef stock on the property. I have a coyote problem, so my thermal sees action pretty often. Having been a weapons officer, I know full well the advantages of both. For those with disposable income, they can be a game changer and allow you to deal with issues that would otherwise be very difficult.

^^i was going to mention, ranch life. My friend has a horse ranch.. among critters, there are occasionally people that wander on to the property. Uninvited of course. It happens and when time comes, I'll be glad you're the 1% and prepared.

An honest answer is "Because I want them" being the primary motivator, with a tangential practical use case of bringing them with me when I go visit back east to see my folks and we hunt whitetails by day and then drop the NODs and bust up some coyotes by night on a family friend's acreage / minor sheep farm. There's also been a few night time 2-gun competitive matches I've gone to. Pigs are another venture I want to get into but just haven't gotten around to yet. Recognizing that my use frequency wasn't significant, I sorta split the difference and went with a quality PVS-14 for much less than 10K while a few of my friends have gone full bore into the high end dual tube world. That's realistically as good as it's gonna get for use as a stateside citizen with their GWOT days in the rearview mirror.

Ultimately, this is America; Swipe your Visa however you please.

Thanks for the civil responses guys! In asking I was afraid I’d come across like the dope that came into this thread a few weeks ago asking “why do you even need a gun?”Coyotes and hogs at night was the one use case I was thinking of and makes plenty of sense.

    Very well said sir!

I have a 10.3" bbl and xps2 laying on my bench too. Just need a rail and upper receiver plus a dive through the parts bin and I have myself a mk18. Maybe that will be one of my winter projects.
