I don’t disagree but it’s not as if they are rubber band tires either. At some point they had to find the balance between wheel size to fit brakes, enough sidewall to allow for off-road work and a limited amount of sidewall to limit flex and sloppy handling in a heavy truck.

At the end of the day it’s the same amount of tire as a stock Tacoma but with 2” more of ground clearance provided by the larger rim.

More ground clearance than any other truck sold.

It’s like an infomercial for Rivian in here.

Yes. As it's a Tacoma VS. Rivian....

    Hence the Tacoma pictured.

Like I said, I'm doing this all for less than the cost of a Rivian alone. Like, $20k less than a Rivian.

$20k less but in a less capable and comfortable vehicle. The advantages of a Tacoma pretty much end at relatively proven reliability and cheaper cost. I could go do the same thing you are doing with a 1995 Ranger for $30k cheaper and be in the same boat, cheaper but less capable and comfortable than a Tacoma.

Rivian is just as lost in the sauce as every other dealer has been when it comes to registering cars with weird situations. It’s going on a week and a half of the guide trying to figure out what they need to do to register the truck in Alaska but using the Colorado address I live at. This is such an easy problem to solve by just giving me the paperwork to send in but like other dealers they seem to want to do it all themselves.

I finally got to see an R1t up close and take a little ride around. It was interesting and there are some things I really like (that gear tunnel). But it doesnt seem that moddable.

It is a great truck objectively but, somehow, I just couldn't bring myself to love it. As things stand I don't think there is enough of a case to switch from my Taco.

Now I need to find a Hummer EV.

What is the latest on the next gen Tacos? I have heard there will be EV and PHEV options?

BEV for sure. Rumours are 4cyl Turbo and turbo hybrid. I'm thinking BEV 2025 or later.

That would be great. I think at this point given my situation and needs something more moddable would be preferred. My hope is that the next gen Taco will fit that bill.

More powerful engines than current, new rear link suspension. Yeh it will be the best Gen yet.

I know that US fleet conversion over to electric vehicles is very unlikely, but it would be cool to own one,.

Depends on your definition of capable. To me driving two hours to the Cape driving on the dunes then driving home without having to stop and charge is important. Same with driving to a ski mountain or towing a boat or camper. The Tacoma is more capable at all of those.

I wouldn’t say the Tacoma is more capable at any of that. More time efficient yes, but not more capable. I figured the 300 mile range and charge times have been beaten to death enough to not include them in that comparison.

I would say the Rivian is the most capable at drag racing and driving through deep water. If you’re serious about off-roading then neither the Tacoma or Rivian are the best choice. Towing something really heavy then get a full-size truck.

Despite this purported capability and its weight, I'd be careful with. Physics is a bitch.
