I’m pretty sure Whistlepig is in VT (I know it is actually) BUT they bought out many many old barrels of Canadian Rye to kick off their brand.

I thought VT too, but the “product of Canada” on the label made me think otherwise. I quickly looked at their site and saw a Canadian flag…will dig deeper…

Yeah the juice is old and Canadian. They bought it all up to start the brand. They have an 18yr rye and Whistlepig didn’t exist 18 years ago. No different than all the brands that use MGP the same way.

 

Their Homestock includes some of their actual VT distilled juice. They started distilling in 2015 so perhaps at some point all of their offerings will be from their own distillate.

 

Yeah I’m sure that’s the plan. Starting a company that involves immediately waiting up to 4 years or many more just to sell your first product is a tough business model to say the least. Again that’s why so many company’s begin with MGP before they sell their own juice, or buy up old stock from someone…. It’s an interesting business.

Late to the whistle pig convo….look up Alberta distillers….then go to your local and buy a bottle of Alberta premium cask strength…save money skip the pig

 

That’s good advice, like Yeti Whistlepig is a branding company. Not that I don’t enjoy their juice but as you inferred it’s just old Canadian rye lol.

 

I really do prefer a bourbon that’s been distilled and bottled in the same place, that means that someone has taken the time and care to make their own decision about the mash bill, yeast, etc as opposed to just taking someone else’s stuff. Yet, there are a few bottles I really enjoy that are sourced, I suppose because someone is doing a great job of blending. Widow Jane, Penelope, etc.

For ranking I'd say left to right how they're lined up is good. The KC15 I had just cracked. I need to let it breathe a bit and revisit.

All this NDP and MGP chat got me in the mood. There are some good ones out there. I think it’s just smart to know what you are buying. There are some older MGPs that are insanely highly regarded.

Mostly like the real real, but Smoke Wagon, Widow Jane, etc. are doing great stuff with barrels from elsewhere.
