The results are in the measurements page. The ring gap between the two replaceable filters is noted.

I guess we would need to see a study that supports the premise that engines are not as suseptable to engine wear from air filtration. Much like you asked me to provide a study regarding wear.

Yeah a study related to damage you claim is caused by a K&N in a modern engine you clown not one that was done 20 years before the company even existed.

Anybody have any proof washing the filter actually cleans anything?

The 1950 SAE paper you referenced was funded by Fram filters. It's not likely that any filter mfr would fund a similar study today. Even K&N concedes it mfrs filters to "achieve overall filtration efficiency in the range of 97% to 99%." as measured by "ISO 5011 test protocols", the same test protocols referenced in the K&N testing efficiency study. The TRD Pro filter falls into that category which makes it acceptable to Toyota. I am not aware of any auto mfr that states an air filter MUST achieve a specific filter efficiency pct. I think it's a lot of ado over nothing. Buy whatever you want, it's your wallet.

Well it cleans off the dirt that is collected on the oil. Usually when I get them, light doesn't even pass through.

I usually degrease them, rinse with low pressure, give a quick air blast from a distance, then let it sit in the sun for 3 hours.

On some other manufacturers, the pcv system actually dirties the air filter, so its a welcome idea. Albeit imperfect.

Lots of dirty looking stuff comes out of my K&N filters. After degreasing and rinsing, I hang it up dry for a couple of days. I just reinstall my old OE air filter while the K&N is drying. After it is dry, I lightly oil and let it sit for another day or two. Have NEVER had a MAF contaminated.

Honestly I wish owners just took care of them. It's a nice sunday job, do it twice a year, you can do it in your sink!

But I don't have the luxury of time, so 3 hours is my ideal. I won't even sell a service in the winter time.

Having a completely DRY K&N is critical to properly oiling it. We all know that oil and water don't mix. A "damp" filter won't properly absorb the filter oil - the oil will sit on the surface of the filter media and can be "sucked" out of the filter and possibly contaminate the MAF. Letting the oiled filter sit for a while, insures proper saturation of the filter media. With my OE filter installed, I am not rushed to reinstall the K&N until it's ready.

Jesus, don't nick pick me as well. I know it's supposed to be dry. 3 hours in the sun on concrete after a gentle blow off is usually more than good.

Why is this thread so wound up.

Not my intent....The intent was to stress DRY for the uninitiated, those who may not know what you know, and the reason why.

From my experience working at a perfomance auto shop, we stayed away from oiled filters because too many people were over oiling them, causing a MAF issue. We did the AEM dry ones with good success. Personally, I've used both, on a 74 Chevelle 454, 86 S15 Jimmy 2.8L, and tried it on some newer MAF cars. The older stuff didn't care, the newer cars didn't like it. Now personally I just use paper filters, simple, easy, no issues ever.

Conscience != Consensus | One keeps you up at night, the other is a general agreement. I guess you could have a guilty consensus if you are serving on a jury. This nitpick brought to you by the corporation for public internet and viewers like you.

Bullshit aside, I do not think you will find a consensus on K&N filters as others have stated. Some see it as a waste of money, others swear by the increased air flow. I'm no hemp bracelet wearing, sunning my butthole, hippy tree hugger but I am in favor of less waste which is why K&Ns appeal to me but on the other hand I tow full time and the K&N oil is one more damn thing to carry that is taking up space in the truck / trailer.

Take a data driven approach. Take your Taco to the dyno and do a run with the stock filter then go with a K&N. I seriously doubt the gains will be significant, but you'll have the data to confirm yes or no.

These threads are just like oil filter threads. I try to avoid them. But l just can't help myself from reading them :notsure:

Yep. And as I remember reading, the more they collect (within reason) the better they filter. I haven’t had a single issue with mine. Installed ~7 years ago. Serviced appropriately. No MAF issues ever.

I ran a K and N drop in filter on my Taco for well over 155K before the Mass Air Flow sensor was trashed by oil from the filter. And yes, I oil it correctly and cleaned it ever other oil change. Since back to paper, no worries . So I saved money on filters for 8 years, but bought a sensor for 41.00. Kinda of a toss up.
