Glad I did or my garage door would have caved in. 100+mph against the front of my house was brutal. If anyone else went through this I hope all is well.

Dang, that was some smart thinking. I'll have to remember that if I'm ever in the same situation.

We made it through with minimal damage. A lot people lost everything that day. My house is built like a brick shithouse. Grateful to make it through unscathed. It definitely was a long day. Ian took his time with us.

    That was good thinking.

I had to replace our 16.5 ft. door that was 20 years old because it was single steel and collapsed when raised/hanging when open.

The weight of the door puts lots of stress on the cross beams.

The double steel/insulated dual spring we have now is much stronger.

I would have done the same thing you did even with a double steel door...100mph winds! Yikes!!!

Glad you and everyone reporting status of their experience are well.

We used to put 2x4 bracing against my parent's garage door. Their garage door faces the ocean and has been replaced a number of times.

Hope you all made it through this ok down south, we still had 80-100 mph winds for 12 hours way up here next to Orlando. Damn thing lasted 2 days, 18 inches of rain in my front yard rain gage, I had to dump out 3 times.

I live in Tampa and wasn't here for Irma quite yet... I definitely have some survivor's guilt up here knowing it was "supposed to" come here. I'm hoping to get down that way and help out soon once it's safer to do so.

I sat in my truck and listened to the radio for updates and it was pretty violent. even with the E-brake pulled it was still lunging my truck back and forth. I’ll be definitely looking into upgrading my garage door soon!

You might have saved your whole house. A lot of times when the garage door goes, the impulse pressure change blows up the ceiling and outside wall that can end up totaling a house structurally.

Good thinking man, simple solution that doesnt require drilling or nailing additional support... also helps prevent tailgate theft if the door stats in place haha.
