Nothing wrong with the 4 banger. Just make sure you test drive it city and highway.
If you can find the truck you want, go for it!

If you have sufficient coin, I would get the V6. Otherwise the 4 banger will definitely make the truck move.

4cyl tried and true 250k engine, the same meh MPG, and you can get a manual still in some trims.

V6 is a little less bulletproof, some big headache leaks and failures reported, similar MPG, higher resale and you can tow a reasonable amount. Still slow, but not dog slow.

YMMV. I would have gone 4cyl if they had a manual access cab option in my market at the time.

I've got a 2020 (w/an Overland Camper shell, approx. 310 lbs) and I love it! You DO have to get used to the AT (Pedal Commander is very helpful), but the MPG and the reliability make up for it IMHO.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Your post change above isn't really a fair assessment of the forum members as a whole given that you only allowed 10 minutes for any input. Things here work like google -- but slower.

Firstly, what is your reason for focusing exclusively on the 4 cylinder?

Per the Toyota "build you own" page, the 4 cylinder 4wd is only available in the access cab, personally I prefer the access cab but the majority of models sold are double cab 5 foot bed models. So if you want a double cab the 4 cylinder is automatically out of the selection.

The V6 costs $2650 more than the 4 cylinder by the way and includes the towing package which is a good upgrade even if you don't plan to tow. It includes more cooling and electrical capacity as well as the hitch and wiring.

It all comes down to your personal needs and expectations, if you want a reliable, handy, run around utility truck for light duty use that you intend to keep basically stock the 4 cylinder is fine for the job.

It there is a trailer, a lift, bigger tires and a bunch of heavy armor in your future plans the 4 cylinder is going to be less satisfactory for the job.

I would suggest you re-edit your post and throttle back your emotions a bit, you might find some very good information here and also some very good and helpful people.

Maybe ask why they're die hard v6 guys instead?

I mean - getting mad that no one will confirm your bias isn't a good way to see if your bias makes sense.

I love my 4 cylinder. Can't recommend it enough. Would only get the v6 if I towed but I only haul.

Get it, I traded my SR 4 banger because 2022 SRs don't have tire pressure reading on the gauges.
2023 SR some claim they have now.

Also, unless you get it tuned, V6 still hunts gear if you cruise at 80 mph, I4 would hold it steady at about 4.5k RPM.

    Check build thread!
You can’t get a manual 4 banger unfortunately. Stopped production in 2017.

4 banger is a good engine, but it depends on what you need it for. If you need to tow or haul anything somewhat heavy on a regular basis the v6 might be better, if not than go for it.

That right there is why you should get the V6, to elevate you above the proletariat caste.

Here's some helpful information for context: 4-cyl 4x4 in a 3rd gen gives the truck the worst power-to-weight ratio of any vehicle in Toyota's current lineup. Even the 3-cyl Scion iQ micro-car (now discontinued) will run circles around it.

the only thing I would change about my 22SR 4 banger,2wd is getting 4wd. gonna get hate for this next statement: there isn't enough of a difference in towing or other capacity between the 6 cylinder and the 4 cylinder. really if any possibility it might make a difference you need something bigger then a Tacoma- otherwise it is still to close to have any margin of safety or other capacity

Whoa, dude, public World Wide Web, not everyone thinks like you, you’re the only one that can make the decision you want. Asking for opinions in today’s world, is like inviting the invading Army in, and asking them not to shoot their guns.

PS, go 4 banger, I’ve had one, it’s slow. But goes everywhere, and anywhere you want, just not fast.
