Hello! I have a 2020 TRD OR with only 34k miles and the front struts are already needing replacement.

Can you recommend a better and more durable set of struts that stay at stock height?

Or, will the better aftermarket ones typically raise the vehicle?

    Thank you for your help.

Bilstein 5100's are a great choice even if you want to stay at stock height. They utilize the stock coil spring and yours are low mileage so would work well together.

Why do you think the shock absorbers are worn out? Are they leaking? Is the suspension oscillating after a bump instead of going immediately back to ride height?

I took my truck for an alignment yesterday because I’m getting inside, wavy tire wear on the fronts. Pep boys told me that there was only minor adjustments needed and that’s how they came to the assumption that it may be the struts.
I’m actually here at Toyota now and they’re looking at it.

    Thank you.

FYI: your truck doesn’t have struts (aka McPherson Struts). It has coil overs. Regardless, it’s not the entire coil over the mechanic is likely referring to. They are likely referring to just the shock absorber.

I’m guessing your shocks are fine, but that’s just an educated guess. I also think Bilstein 5100’s are overkill if you are not intending to lift the truck. There’s also scant evidence that they are more durable than the stock shocks.

Note also that the OR comes with Bilstein shocks: albeit smaller diameter and non-adjustable ones.

Just talked to the mechanic and he thinks it may be due to missing the 15k alignment. He doesn’t believe it’s the shock absorbers either. I’m relieved.

    Thank you!

What do you mean by the “15k alignment”? There is no alignment included in the Toyota care plan AFAIK. I think your mechanics are just taking wild guesses.

Doubtful it's shocks at only 34K. Find a real alignment shop.

I’ve seen all four fail just as early.

My suggestion is 4600 for soft road ride. 5100 for firm road ride, better off-road.

I’d never bother replacing with oem trd bisltiens

I don’t see it in the care plan either.

Any tips on what else may be off if it’s not mis-alignment or shocks?

oh wow! I guess it does happen this early ‍♂️

Will look into those 2 models. As for now, I’m leaning towards 5100.

    Thanks!

I almost forgot…the passenger rear has slight uneven, inside-wavy that the Toyota mechanic pointed out.
The 2 photos above are the 2 fronts.

Do you happen to have a long bed? If so, I had been getting the same tire wear on mine since new. Once I replaced the struts with trd pro fox ones, the tire issues went away. It was not that the struts were bad, they were just under sized to control the truck very well.

I have a short bed. Any idea what it was about the fox shocks that corrected the issue?

They are way bigger and can handle the weight of the truck. The stock shocks just cant keep it under control.
