I got the 2 yr or 25 K mile maintenance plan, I was wondering if letting the dealership change the oil .etc is a good idea?

There ain't no free lunch. Your oil will probably be changed by the lowest wrench monkey on the totem pole. I didn't go for it. There are some very important things that can go wrong. I have changed my own oil since day one. Yea, if they fuck up (and you can prove it) they will make it right. I say; man up and change your own oil. It's your duty as a Taco owner.

this is my 4th toyota truck and the dealer has always done my service. haven't had an issue in over 10 years with dealer service. plus i can walk around and look at new trucks while i wait. the free 2 year service saves me about 200 so not a huge deal but better than nothing.

Let em change the oil. Not worth a day in the waiting room to me. But apparently is to you.

The oil filter is on top, so you can check to see if that's on. When they bring it to you. Make sure it has oil in it before you drive it away. That's ALL that can go wrong with an oil change. So you've done your checks. You "SHOULD" be checking your oil every time you drive anyway.

An oil change is pretty easy. But I'm sure not *paying* to buy oil when I've got a coupon to have the dealer change it for me. They'll do it while you wait if you ask when you make the appointment.

Bring a rag and check the oil when they roll it out to you if you're worried about it.

I've never heard of anyone who checks their oil every time they drive. I know some pretty uptight people (myself included) who check it at every fillup.

The other thing they *can* do wrong is cross thread the drain plug. If they do, you'll discover it soon enough - either on a leak or more likely the first time you change it yourself. It'll still be in warranty and you can make them fix up their mess then.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Dealer auto techs are well skilled and go through extensive training. In fact besides being ASE certified (a requirement to work in a dealership) the tech is TTEN trained (Toyota's own training network).

Sure, in the end it is the low skilled tech that changes oil, tires, etc.. but at least at a dealership the bar is set a bit higher than other places.

Changing your own oil would be great if you enjoy doing that - but lets' be honest here, it isn't rocket science. Certainly couldn't be harder then cooking a burger at a fast food restaurant, right? And we all let other people cook food for us, people that are limited in their skill-set. But still can follow simple directions.

Also, it's free. In this economy with so many folks tight on cash it would insulting not to take advantage of that.

    My 2 cents anyway.

Mr guyjones10,, You made me feel better! I do the same thing! I always walk around the dealers lot and look at the new cars while I wait for service! I HATE waiting rooms, I make the salesmen nervous, they are always chasing me around in the lot and I have to explain to them I am waiting on service, some of them even took me by the hand and led me back to the waiting room. But I always bought new vehicles in the past while waiting for service, but no salesman in the world understands that!
They think I am strange for walking around the lot looking at new cars.

You made me feel better knowing I am not strange, knowing someone else does the same thing.

    Thank You

yea, my dealer has one of the largest inventories in GA so alot to look at. plus they usually have a custom truck or two in the showroom. i know all of the service guys on a first name basis so i feel comfortable. the only issue i have ever had was not rotating my tires one time. i also look at the tires before and after to make sure. fronts will have a lot more brake dust. i talked with service manager and did not make a big issue just asked for them to correct. the guy doing service came out and said he was sorry that he had a very bad day and just overlooked. i told him no big deal, it happens. from that point on, everyone has always been overly nice when i come in.

I dont know what I'll do, when I change oil in my vehicles I always fill the new filter up with oil befor they go on. Cant do that with the Tacoma.A friend of mine told about one of those Quick oil change stores "Ji--y -L-be that wiped off used filters and put them back on customers cars.

What color sharpie will leave visible mark on a black oem filter? Maybe scratch the paint on the filter instead? But then the dealer would just use their sharpie to cover the scratch...o no, sharpie wars!

I think all dealers vary and I as well as you had some doubt about letting the dealer do it. So far I've been happy with the service. It's free so let em do it. I still can't wait to change my own oil though :)

I got the 2 year free plan and I let them change my oil. I bring them the Mobil 1 since they don't use it there and they charge extra for synthetic (like $8 a quart). I mark the filter just in case they get lazy but so far they have done a good job. I always inspect for spills and other stupid things. When the free ones are done I'll do it myself.

Dealer does my Tacoma's oil. It's cheaper than doing it myself and there is no mess to clean up. I always mark my filter prior to the change so I can visually inspect it after I get it back. There are other benefits too, my dealer does a free 25 point inspection as well including testing the battery so I think it's great. I do however crawl under my truck and check things out from time to time and I do grease the zerks, etc.

    Too few to list.
I let the dealer do their free maintenance. It's free and the service department that I go to does a real good job though I still check the work afterwards in their parking lot.
