Victim To The Super White Paint Flaking

Just happen to notice the paint flaking on my truck, super disappointed in Toyota but anyways! I’m not looking to paint to the whole bedside, going to paint that spot only.

Thinking of sanding with 400 grit sandpaper, primer, base coat and a clear coat. Going to try to blend it in as best, luckily there’s no pearl or metallic flakes in the paint. I know it’s not the best way to repair, it will get me by for now. Financially do not want to spend the money to paint the bedside, praying that the other panels don’t start. Really don’t want to sell the truck, especially the amount of money I spent in the last year on it.

My Spruce Mica is loosing a little paint in a few areas too. It's just lifting off the gray primer underneath.
It's mainly happening on the tops of my fenders, but you can only see it when the hood is open. I have one spot at eye level where my passenger side front and access door meet, but again, you can only see it with the door open. It's about the size of a dime. I'm going to try a touch up pen if I can get the right color, since the surface finish isn't as critical in those spots.

 

Is that original paint underneath? I'm surprise to see gold/tan underneath white.

can confirm, that is the base coat/primer. I also have super lame, super white

 

With all of the regulations on paint we're lucky if it sticks for 5 years, much less 10 years.

 

Toyota white is single stage right?

 

It’s white and clear mixed together. So not like a traditional single stage.

 

curious what you do. I have super white on my 15 corolla and its flaking bad.

 

Paint match fail…not even a close match…even went to an automotive paint shop that made me a spray bomb…not even close!



Temporary solution lol!

 

This isn't funny, but I did giggle a little with the off white color match. The black patch looks cool!

 

Wasnt funny then, funny now lol!

Somehow the black patch vinyl pulls it off…temporarily lol!

 

So shop mixed me up new can with no bronze tint in it, the clear coat they sold me turned the base coat to a yellowish tint as well.

New base coat with Rustoleum high gloss clear coat. Test piece btw lol!

 

The black blends well. Is that a black vinyl wrap piece?

 

God I hate those black streaks from the plastic bed rail covers

I want to wrap my truck but I fear the wrap will take the paint off in a few years when I have to redo the wrap. But at that point I will just keep wrapping the truck

 

I may not have payed close enough attention to the other threads on here but I do believe this is the first time I’ve seen peeling in that specific location.

Mines peeling on both sides of the B pillar. Passenger side started recently. Plan on wrapping the B pillars to try and contain it. Also hoping the rest of the truck doesn’t shit the bed otherwise I’m going to be in a position I dont want to be in.

 

Cure is don't use most protectant products, they'll run. Solution is cheap "ceramic" spray. I use the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions on all the black plastic. Lasts for a year and never runs. YMMV

 

I’ve never put a protectant on those things . Just wash the truck . I think it’s because they are 14 years old they are just breaking down
