Yeah, probably thermostat, and if the thermostat went it's likely the heater pipe burst too. This is what happened to my truck two weeks ago. The heater pipe is plastic and Toyota remedied the problem by making a metal replacement. My truck was doing exactly what @ALI3N_123's truck was doing, though it seemed like the needle went higher. My heater also quit working because the thermostat was stuck closed and the coolant couldn't make the full loop.

And yours has less than 90K? I shouldn't be complaining since mine lasted past 157K!

Also, make sure you check the heater pipe. Yours is a V6, right? I don't know where it's located on a 4.0L, but apparently Toyota originally used a plastic pipe that is prone to cracking and remedied it with a metal replacement part.

 

Sounds like it’s hard to get to. I’m currently scared shitless, my instinct is to always hope for the worst.

 

Same here; I thought my head gasket was bad. On a 2.7L, part 16268 is the heater pipe. My mechanic sent me this to show me what part needed to be replaced. The part is about $90...

 

I’m no mechanic but I think it might just be the thermostat.I had Toyota replace mine when they did the frame .Just because

 

Currently replacing the radiator. We noticed only the top portion of the radiator heats up while the bottom remains cool. This is probably due to sludge buildup from extended use with plain water. After we installed the thermostat, we noticed that the temperature remained normal at operating temp at idle for a good 20 minutes before the temp started to rise, raising the RPM’s to 2k quickly brought it back down… something that wouldn’t happen before. Although this isn’t an official head gasket test, there isn’t any foam forming in the coolant by the radiator cap.

 

I haven’t messed with the cooling system until now so I’m thinking the previous owner ran it for an extended period of time with plain water.

 

Radiator replaced, still doing the same thing. He’s going after the water pump next. First he’ll inspect and will decide to replace or not.

 

Blades inside the water pump are completely gone.



Once that’s replaced, my only worry would be the damage done to the engine if it still overheats after the new water pump.

 

Holy shit.

 

Driving fairly fast ranging from 30-75 mph, truck maintained normal operating temp. I truly hope this is what was causing the problem. Thanks to everyone and especially @b_r_o for the accurate suggestions.

 

I dodged a headgasket, so my budget still allows me to buy a Walther PDP Compact.





All in all, I spent $480 in total for the thermometer, radiator, and water pump and labor. Not bad for a ghetto mechanic job.
