A bit self serving too - if you train the people around you very well ultimately you do less work ...

Little bit of this and that
This is very much true, I currently have 2 guys that I'm training and I find that the farther they progress and learn the less "helping" I have to do. Thankfully they are teachable and willing to listen to experience, makes training very much enjoyable!

Rusty has a good way of looking at things. In my experience in aerospace there's two ends of the spectrum.
    - the one end is the guy who never shares any of the "trade secrets" that the guys who have done this work 20-30 years pickup through experience because they feel like it makes them invaluable, they can't get rid of them. This is false, they will still get rid of you.
-the other end is the guy who shares any and all knowledge with the young hungry up and comers because they A)feel its best for the shop and B) takes the weight off their shoulders a bit.
We have written procedures for basically all of our work but they are intentionally written vaguely so that if we were to strike, Nasa couldn't just hire 25 tom, dick and harrys off the street.

Reminds me of the time I was visiting my mom and flipped a switch to turn on a stairway light. It just flopped around. I asked and she said it was like it for a while….(She was in her 80s at the time, living alone) It was last replaced when me and my friend renovated the kitchen in the mid 1980s…

I’ve gone through my own house doing the same especially with receptacles that are sticky getting plugs in. If the switch/receptacle doesn’t need replacement, I’ll swap you the faceplate screw when it gets chipped up.

    Tacoma trade in update.

My wife contacted a dealership and they still basically only have used vehicles and they want about $7k over MSRP (and will probably get it, just not from us) so she has decided to leave things like they are.

So instead of trading it in, she logged in to pay the loan off and found out that to kill it off, she has to call them but it was after hours so she paid off all but $17.17.

Now we're down to "only" two car payments instead of three. o_O

That’s crazy to me. I do the opposite, I program my control system and our procedures are written so that pretty much anybody can do the work. That way if our union did strike we can still run without much interference.
