I find it curious that in every picture that someone has posted here, the gray (sometimes it looks light tan) coating (primer? ecoat?) is as tight as a tick on the body: no hint of lifting. That tells me either faulty prep or surface contamination or if it is the electro-coat, maybe the charge was ineffective so it never bonded in certain places. No one has ever mentioned seeing any warning signs of failure: like a bubble on the surface. To me, that would be something you would be able to see or feel.

Has anyone ever caught this when it happened and actually managed to get a chip of the paint in-hand? I'd like to hear if the back of the chip is white or another color. (two layers).

Electricity does not bond paint to a substrate, it is used to attract the paint to a substrate. Bonding is more of a chemical / mechanical process. That said, if one has a contaminated surface that the paint is attracted to, you can end up with adhesion problems down the road.

I mispoke: thank you! I'd suspect a "bad day" on the assembly line, but as this problem spans multiple years, models and even colors, that's off the table. You'd think they'd be able to figure it out by now.

I think the chipping you guys are talking about is mostly on the white trucks, but every other color experiences really bad fading and peeling.

Umm I don’t think you can say that about every other color. I have ZERO issues with my 2011 Speedway Blue and it lives outside 24/7.

Thank you for the education. So the super white and the primer aren't playing nice?

It would appear that way, but without sophisticated testing processes and equipment, it's not fair to say.

I'm in that boat. IIP roof is in need of some assistance soon. My hood is fine though.

My 2005 SWB Taco had rock solid paint... My '21 MGM Tundra has the most unimpressive paint job I have ever seen. Look at it wrong and it scratches or flakes off.

I contacted Toyota Canada, nothing will come of it but it’s worth a shot.

I think if enough people contact Toyota something might get done, at least it can't hurt to try.

    Their reply:

“We have received your e-mail and photos and photos and added to your file. We are sorry that you have encountered a problem with the paint on your 2013 Tacoma.

We have reviewed all our records for this vehicle and note that it has been in service for over 8 years. While we understand that unexpected repair expenses are most frustrating, there does come a time where the manufacturer can no longer assume financial responsibility for a vehicle. The components in question were covered under the manufacturer's warranty for 3 years or 60,000 km (whichever came first). That period expired too long ago for us to be able to offer financial assistance toward this repair; as such, you would be responsible for the cost of all future repairs to your vehicle.

At this time, we kindly suggest arranging an appointment with your preferred dealership for a diagnosis/repair of this condition. However, we would like to mention that any repair expenses and diagnostic fees would be your responsibility.

We appreciate your taking the time to write to us and giving us the opportunity to explain our position.

    Sincerely,

    Bernardete Castelhano

I've received the same reply, a few times. I always ask if they think it's reasonable to expect the paint to literally fall off of a Toyota vehicle after 4-5 years. They never answer that one.

Can you explain the reason for the following vehicles listed are covered as old as 2008, every model but a Tacoma?

The program covers the following years and models of vehicles with the original blizzard pearl and super white paint:

    • 2010-2015 4Runner
    • 2008-2017 Camry HV
    • 2008-2017 Camry
    • 2009-2018 Corolla
    • 2008-2017 Avalon
    • 2008-2017 RAV4
    • 2012-2015 Scion IQ
    • 2011-2015 Scion XB
Toyota said the Lexus program covers 2008-2009 GX470.

Just found two spots under the driver side front window. Mine is a 3rd gen Tacoma.
2019. Haven’t seen much said about paint peeling on that model, but I bought mine new, and this is the first time I have had a paint issue. From everything I’ve read, sounds like my problem will get much worse with no help in sight. Crap.

I wish I had the time to sleuth this and find the common denominator. There has to be one. Equally intriguing is why the Tacoma is singled out as "not part of the club."
I'm betting it's numbers. As far as I can tell, with the exception of the Tacoma, every other current model is IN the club on this one with the exception of the majority of Lexus models.

Recalls are for safety issues. They only do that because the government makes them. They'll never fix your paint.

About 3 posts up you'll see an example of a paint recall, just not for Tacomas.
