Unobtrusive sub for Double Cab?

Any way to install a HU powered Sub unobtrusively in a double cab. Not looking for BOOM or rattle just some lower end fill.

I don't want to remove anything stock..

Maybe just throw a Bazooka in the back?

 

A head unit cannot power a sub. I cannot, with a clear conscience, recommend anything that does not require ANY modification to your truck. Even the factory junk JBL set up uses the driver's side rear storage.

 

Your gonna need to get a stealth box.

 

The HU I am looking at has a separately powered 70Watt Sub output. Plenty for a small cab at lower listening levels. The idea of a Sub for me is to hear the entire Freq range at lower levels. I just don't want to remove panels to install a sub. Maybe a portable box would do fine. I just don;t like carving up a stock truck. I had a Bazooka years ago and it filled the lowend nicely. If I decide to go with an HU without a powered sub output I will look for a "throw in the back solution"

Maybe this would work on the floor behind the drivers seat. I don;t carry passengers and usually keep the back seats down.

whats the big deal with removing a panel to install a sub? to each his own but I gotta say - its really easy to install stuff in tacos. Most everything "pops" right out. You'd be much better off to go ahead and buy a small amp and a shallow sub/box.

this takes a little bit of modification, but not too much, just popping out the plastic in the back
put a JL 13.5 inch pancake sub behind the back seats, i have pic of mine, you cannot tell it is there unless you fold the back seat down, and if you are wanting the storage, you only lose the space behind one, and you still get some of that space (i store a pack rod, reel, and small tackle box in the same area)

oh, the sub is powered by an amp that is right next to it, I highly doubt you will find a sub that can be powered by your head unit though

 

Not sure where you can fit a Bazooka tube, but they do, or at least they used to sell the ones with their own amp built in.

 

WAY too big. The head unit with 70W sub output I have seen actually puts out under 35W and is a joke. Like I said... I cannot reccoemnd anything that is not garbage for what you describe. A Steathbox for a doublecab requires large amounts of modifications, including cutting the rear of your largest storage and drilling sheet metal for anchoring so I dont knwo why it was recomended... a custom box requires less cutting and an amp can be mounted under a seat.

 

i bet a box could be made to fit in the floor area in the back but you'd still need an amp and a decent sub for the box if it is going to sound decent. IMO a sub running off of "70w" (read 35w) will sound pretty horrible if it sounds at all.

 

Yeah I agree and after more research that any amp on the HU won't properly power a sub.II may try a powered sub like the MTX or Bazooka. I had a Bazooka years ago and it filled the low end to my satisfaction. I don't want "boom" Just a little more thump for those bass light recordings of classic rock tunes. I really don't want to remove panels and add amps.

You might check out the Focal underseat powered subwoofer. It is self-powered and fits under the seat. I think the model number is FOCAL BUS 20. I had one installed in my 06 Access Cab Pre and the sound is awesome. Like you, I did not want to have a big box in the back seat of something that thumped me till I was deaf. It will run you about $600 for the unit. I had mine professionally installed.

 

Is there any way to just "beef up" the stock 8" sub already in the truck? I know on aftermarket stuff you can adjust it on the amp(high and low pass). Is the amp in the truck accessible?

 

I have a kicker 10" and I find that most of the time it's not even noticable. I even keep the sub volume up all the way. I would definitely not recommend anything less than that.

I don't have the stock woofer..And I don't want to remove panels to install a box unit and paste amps across the back wall. I think the under seat powered unit or similar will do the trick. I think people underestimate the power of 50 watts RMS in a small area. My Klipsche Promedia 2.1 computer speakers use a sub that is powered with 50 watts RMS and I rarely turn it past 10 o'clock in the room.....That volume in the truck would sound far better than the stock unit even at more volume to overcome the signal to noise ration of a vehicle.The idea is quality over quantity. I know people believe they need 1000 watts in a car. but for normal listening levels in a cabin 100-200 watts for a sub is plenty. My monitors MSP 7s are bi_amped at 80/50 and would also sound great in the car. Although I do have a powered sub I rarely use it for mixing.

I know a little about audio as this is my work/playground.

Search around some more. In addition to the Focal box I know that Infinity, Kenwood, JL Audio, Bazooka and a few others make smaller self-contained sub/amp boxes. Some are small enough to fit under the seat, some still need to go in back.

BTW +1 on the sub power requirements. I'm running 200W to a 10" Arc Audio sub in a sealed box, plenty of thump when I want it. 1000W in a car/truck cabin,,, how many people put that much power to a home system to fill a space the size of their bathroom? Ahhh, but to each their own, we all overdo it with something in life!

 

i have actually looked into finding subs for our body style tacos and the best one i have found is by boss its a sub and the box and the amp all in one made to fit under seat and behind seats ill post the link

The Kenwood X994/ SWI Kit is the HU I will likely get. Boss seems like Planet Audio kinda of budjet but as a sub only it can't be all that bad.

I know some find it strange not to want to remove panels to install a sub and amp..But I am convinced I don;t need all that power and driver while running stock speakers and a middle of the road HU.

I drive 14 miles a day 5 months a year. Don;t need anything elaborate
Just "better" than stock. The HU alone will solve that problem. The sib is a nice addition. Since I do not listen to LO FREQ intense music like Hop Hop, RAP, Dance Trance, a smaller driver and less powerful amp will suffice
