Accord would go 100K with no oil change, no brakes, and the BWW will require 4 sets, and 30K in oil changes.

I had a 2014 VW Passat TDI that blew two turbos in 3 years. No mods to the car at all. Other than that, it was a great car, got 40 actual miles to the gallon. Better than most hybrid junkers....... I sold it back to VW as part of the big "Dieselgate" class action lawsuit, and used that money to buy my Tacoma :D

My dad's 2003 Matrix got 40 mpg and he hauled everything he needed to build a 12' x 12' sleep shack at our lake lot in it except the plywood. Pretty sure he made one trip out there with the tires rubbing the fenders.

    Nice!

My dad had a hunting partner way back in the 70/80's that had a Dodge Colt, it was a 3 cylinder "roller skate" of some Japanese manufacture, it got 40+ MPG all the time with that ancient engine technology. Still not buying why modern engines can't do at least 2x what most of them get.

My 1980 Toyota 2WD 4 cylinder carbureted Hilux got 17 - 18 MPG. Same as my 2017 6 cylinder fuel injected Tacoma..........

I bet the 2017 weighs about 2X the 1980, and it punches a much bigger hole in the wind.

    Emissions.

Emissions are a double edged knife for the engineers. Oddly, good mileage and "clean" don't necessarily go hand in hand.

In the 1960's the Rambler American was famous for winning the Mobilgas Economy Run year after year. 25+ mpg was an easy achievement for it.

However the older cars emitted far more pollution per mile. Comparing the Rambler to a V8 Tundra that got half the mileage the Tundra is still much cleaner at the tailpipe.

If the emissions standards were rolled back to 1990's levels we might see 35 mpg Tacomas. (but don't hold your breath waiting) ;)

Pulled up to grab a wing order, as I went to exit my vehicle I noticed a Mercedes had pulled up cock eyed and its front end was inches from my driver side tire. This B pulled in so fast that she didn't even notice that she blocked me from opening my door. I tried to yell to her but she was too busy with her phone...

Honestly I have never used my horn like I did to get her attention and boy did I. I scared the shit out of her so bad that she took her foot off the brake and the vehicle started rolling towards me! She luckily caught in time and looked up at me as I was shaking my head.

I finally got out of the truck and noticed she was still sitting half way out of the parking spot face deep again into her phone blocking traffic.

    Asshole...

Picture isn't that great but you get the point...

Oh wow, interesting. Did not know that. But a 35 mpg Tacoma? That would have been amazing.
