Our prius is 10 years old with just over 100k. Never replaced the brake fluid yet. Only needed rear pads, fronts are still fine.

Go to your glove compartment and look for the booklet called Warranty and Maintance Guide. In the back is the Maintance schedule for your truck. Unless you meet those "special operating conditions" you can tell the service writer to kiss your ass.

Wow, so much misinformation in this thread regarding brake fluid. Here are a few facts:
    • Brake fluid ages not because of use (or non-use for that matter), it ages because it is hygroscopic and collects water (yes, even in a "closed" brake system). Said another way, a brake fluid replacement schedule should always be time dependent, not mileage dependent.
    • Most manufacturers who have brake fluid replacement schedules opt for either two years (I'm thinking the German manufacturers here) or three years (many American and Asian manufacturers).
    • When water collects in brake fluid, given the water saturated fluid is heavier than the unsaturated fluid, the water sinks to the bottom of the system where is will lead to corrosion. Just because the fluid in the brake (and clutch) reservoir(s) look "good/clean/fresh..." has absolutely zero bearing on the serviceability of the fluid down at the business end of the system.
    • Failure to replace brake fluid on a timely basis WILL result in accelerated internal corrosion of brake calipers and wheel cylinders (drum brakes), and where applicable, clutch slave cylinders (manual transmissions).
    • The other negative side effect of old/compromised brake fluid is the boiling of the fluid right when you need it the most, say working your way through the mountains pulling a heavy load; heavy use of the brakes will cause compromised brake fluid to boil and suddenly, MASSIVE BRAKE FADE.

Long story short, regardless of whether you drive 50,000 miles a year or 2,000 miles per year, do your brakes a favor and flush the brake fluid at least every three years.

^^ This. Dealers always try and push the Special Operating Conditions schedule because they make more money. When you push back they will give you some lame ass reason why you meet them or just say "this it what we (the dealer) recommend". Tell them they can do what's in the factory maintenance schedule or you will find a dealer or private shop that will. It's a sin how these service writers upsell and take people for a ride that trust them because they don't know any better and are depending on an "expert".

You're not paying them for what they know.

Wouldn't shock me if that's a Service Writer using software to determine SRT and it just spits out - no ability to modify or actually do anything other than data entry. Software doesn't know the engine is outside the truck.

Agreed, whether it is an early service citing "Severe Service" or bogus service like Fuel Injector cleaning or Blinker Fluid, I always ask the service advisor to put it in writing such a service is required, and to back up their claims with published documentation from that manufacturer. They typically back off without another word.

By special tools you mean a hand pump and some vinyl tubing?

    It is

Injector cleaning isn't a bogus service.. it's just that the vast majority of people don't need it even by the time they trade their car in since they don't drive them that hard

Injector cleaning is a totally bogus service, modern fuels have more than enough "detergents" (i.e. additives) to keep fuel injectors fully operable for the life if the engine, and this includes even "el-cheapo" gas.

SE Toyota just sent out an email on a "special" for a fuel injector and throttle body cleaning for $299. Gave me a good chuckle just before I clicked delete LOL

Accurate. Super easy to DIY. Get the diff fluid in the bags so you can maneuver them in there for the front and t case. Rear is easier than an engine oil change. I don't use OEM, I just use valvoline. Works mint.

Accurate. Also easy to do yourself. Brake bleed is like 25$ in tools, 4$ in fluid, done. Worth it to do it yearly if you have the tools, worth it to do every 3ish years if you go to a shop. I'd go off broadway, not to the dealership.

2-3 years for brake fluid is spot on, and should be done. You'll feel the difference if you haven't touched your brakes for several years. They work fine without it, but the difference is significant.

    Both are easy to DIY.

PS fluid I haven't done yet but chances are is something you can kind of dick around with rather than needing to be stringent at 30k.

Do it yourself, I get free oil changes for life at my dealer and they said I needed an air filter changed because my snorkel makes it dirtier, not true. It was designed to be higher for clean air and not water crossings. Anyway they quoted 150 and I said no Ill do it and why is it so high. He said instalation is the biggest cost. I laughed and made a scene asking how its installed wrong with no answer given.

Toyota around 10 years, brake fluid flush is a good idea. Coolant should be done at 100,000 miles but often test fine but I won't let it go past 8 years.

Stuff I keep in the shop:

Phoenix Systems 8006-B Double-Ended Coolant + Brake Fluid Test Strips (15 foil wrapped test strips), 1 Pack

ITEQ Brake Fluid Liquid Tester Pen with 5 LED Indicators, Calibrated For DOT3 DOT4 Brake Fluid

2004 Jeep TJ stopped by. 36,000 original miles, manual transmission 4 cylinders. Under powered, under geared, but a creampuff for the new owner. Coolant was fine, brake fluid full of moisture so it was flushed. Noisy pulley bearings, new brake fluid.

If you use Toyota Synthetic, 10K miles is fine. Local dealer "free oil change" for the first two years they use the cheapest oil and say, "10K is fine." No friggin' way!

Toyota Car Nut on Youtube does Toyota/Lexus and has lots of videos about motors with 10K mile oil changes, he is adamant about 5K/6 month oil changes.

25mpg on my 17 Taco says otherwise. Fuel pump replacement on a 19 Corolla because of watery gas also says otherwise.

99% of the time, you are correct. But man, the one person who needs it..... Lol.

Throttle bodies do get dirty..... At like, 300,000 miles.

    Time for a new dealer.

It's the same oil. Doesn't make sense to have separate "cheapest" bulk oil storage for TC jobs.

    What's a joke about it?

Part of a courtesy 10 point with another service. If you're dealer isn't scum lol

Sorry, gotta call B.S., good mileage on any vehicle in no way proves the efficacy of a fuel injector service. Anecdotally speaking, I retired an older vehicle (which I'd purchased new) a few years ago with over a quarter of a million miles; never once did this vehicle have a fuel injector service performed and yet, it was still returning better fuel economy than when it was fresh off the showroom floor.

Then again, anecdotal evidence is proof of absolutely nothing.

My local Toyota dealership comped me a 30,000 mile service (as good will for a screw up they made on the 20,000 Toyota Care service). Their comped 30,000 mile service was an oil and filter change and standard "inspection". Your service department is trying to hose you.
