Hello all...I just purchased a 2001 Tacoma SR5 2WD 2.4. I have always wanted one but finally pulled the trigger. Around here there are 100 people chasing the same Tacoma the second it is listed so you have to make bold fast and sometimes stupid decisions. Im my case yes I was bold....yes I got to see the truck....and yes I was kinda stupid :( . She has 195k on the clock and is dinged and scratched from living in the city on most body panels. The hood and the roof have clear coat fade :( . I purchased for 5K and in the real world it would be a $2k truck if it didnt say Toyota on the back. It has had some work on it and it did very recently pass a very difficult to pass Maryland vehicle inspection. It has new exhaust from the cat back....new brakes.....new sway bar ends....new ball joints...and half decent rubber. My concerns are valve job needed or new cat needed. Since I jumped in with no pre purchase inspection I might have to pay the man. Symptoms.....classic rough idle and she is a little low on power but I assume the 2.4 is slow anyway. The battery was dead when I bought it so it was the first thing I replaced along with the air filter. After batt change the idle was twice as bad....tried idle relearn but I didnt see any fluctuation in the rpm's while it was supposedly re learning. It really wants to stall but it would make me mad so I dont let it. I believe the first thing I should do is jump right in and face the grim reaper.....do a compression test. That said since I am only a regular average at best back yard mechanic .... yet I like to turn wrenches anyway.....I would prefer to clean the throttle body and try another relearn. I know I am in serious violation of too long of a message/ramble.....especially on my first post so I will try to end it. I am looking for a Toyota specific old school chain smokin' Tacoma ownin' wrench turnin' guy that can work on a 2.4 in his sleep. I live in Chantilly Va but would travel up to 100 miles for a good mechanic. Especially for the potential valve job. Do you guys know of anyone???? Thanks!

I would clean throttle body and that little IAC under it....
    invest in new injectors......
    And replace all vac lines.....

And then see how it runs.....go from there.....

Easy stuff to do on Saturday afternoon....
.....for every nut on the truck.....there's a doz vids on line for different ways to turn it.....

Ultimately you need someone with a scanner to watch engine in real time.....

Bad news ....your truck has no power....so got to keep her tuned up....
good news ......way, way , way easier to work on than the taco 6's....3.4..5vz.....
.....and should last a lot longer.....

Thanks Silver. Yes sir I have watched the vids for sure. I agree throttle body IAC and vac lines. They need to be done either way so why not knock it out. Is there a way to buy a kit of vac lines for the 2.4 so I can replace them all? Also I watched the vids on throttle body and IAC some TB's look to have a metal gasket and I thought others didn't. Should I just buy a new TB gasket before starting the job? Last question.....I have seen people spraying carb cleaner all over the IAC getting it on the rubber gasket.....wouldn't that make the gasket swell up? My thought is just to stop by a Toyota dealership and buy both OEM gaskets and replace.

Yeah I turn the TB upside down to keep cleaner out of electrical....
Its best if you pull the iac off and clean carefully.....those are about $300 to replace......
And grab those two gaskets,,,,,sometime the TB one is rubber and maybe reuseable.....

Someone use to have hose kit for 3rz and 2rzs.....
    But those disappeared....

Other day someone found these.....black, red, and blue.....

Thanks for the info! Yep I want to replace all the rubber and a kit like this would do the trick. I was thinking Toyota has an actual kit that their mechanics would install at the dealership for vacuum lines OEM......but his stuff looks to be very high quality. Yes I will grab the gaskets and be removing the IAC. This is one of the reasons I purchased the 4 banger. It is simple to do a lot of the work on it and it has a chain vs belt. With mine being all out of whack she was slow to begin with but mine is even slower and wants to stall at idle. Gotta get that fixed! I watched a video about the fan clutch possibly being a culprit of a rough idle if the TB and IAC.....plugs and boots dont work.....I will approach that next. Thanks
