Welp, sitting here at my truck waiting for my son. Shot a big 8 about 45 minutes ago. 33 yard shot. Ran into a soybean field did the wobbly legs a bit, then wandered off. Waited a few climbed down, can’t find arrow OR blood. Hit sounded solid, ran off tail clamped down. Could be liver. *sigh* Got the makings of a long night.

Son came over to help look. Found some gut material about 100 yards from the hit site. Soon as I saw that we backed out. I’ll get back on it in the AM. Still didn’t find the arrow.

As I play the shot back in my mind, believe he started to spin away before I heard the thunk.

I will say this, it was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had bowhunting. I watched about 15 deer feeding in soybean field. Watched them for about an hour and a half. Including the buck. They bedded for a bit. When the buck stood up I gave 2 short grunts. He lifted his head and started walking right to me. Stopped, fed, continued walking in. He was at 30 yards for about 10 minutes and never presented a shot. Finally he turned broadside in a shooting lane and…..

have to tune in tomorrow. I don’t even know the outcome.

No joy. Started off by checking the range to where he was standing. ~30 yards. Got a good bearing on that and looked for the arrow. Spent 1/2 hour making larger semi-circles....nada. Went over to where the gut material was marked. Again, started zig zagging back and forth about 20 yards and movig forward about 5 yards at a time. Again, nothing. Walked back over to the wood and field edge and proceeded to check every trail leading in to the woods. Did that for about two hours. Turned around headed back doing the same thing. Nothing. No arrow, no blood, no more gut goop. The "road" that leads to where I parked, parallels a small stream. I checked that along the whole length as gut shot deer will head to water. I have an idea where he might have gone, but it will take me and my son to work thru it. It's a fairly spot area just inside the woods, pretty much a bedding area, littered with trails, droppings, beds.... But it's basically hands and knees to move thru it.

Like I told my wife, it's not the fact I didn't get my deer or tag my buck. It's the fact I failed to recover it. And I hate that feeling. Prolly been close to 25 years since I lost one. And that one still stings a bit.

I know the feeling all to well. Do you know of anyone with tracking dogs, gut shots are almost always fatal. Good luck with any other efforts to find him.

Yep I got that same feeling last year and still not over it

Godspeed my friend. Couple years ago a friend guy shot one that we looked for all day. It ended up being less than 100 yards away in the creek. Same deal, damn near impossible to move through. Took the tractor and cleared a path
