Tacoma Vs. Rivian

Such a great machine and left hand drive makes this even more rare but Doug has been turning his reviews into a big commercial for his auction site. Just gotta look beyond that. But interesting truck.

 

Even more bad news from failing Rivian...

That’s a lot of problems after only 10K miles. If that half shaft problem is widespread that could be the end of the company.

 

Could also mean waiting for the revised version of the vehicle with new half shafts was worth the wait.

 

At this point. You might be better off to wait until a better manufacturer makes a better truck.

 

That’s an option too. I have lots of options.

 

Other than the age of the company it’s really no different than most modern vehicle introductions. Even Toyota is guilty of producing shitty subpar trucks during the first year of production, see the 2016 Tacoma and 2022 Tundra debacles.

Does that fairlead look comically small to anyone else?

 

It’s only small when you compare it to something else in the picture that has known scale, like the helmet. It is the size below comically small once you realize that.

 

I think the whole vehicle is small. Like a side by side with a van body?

 

That looks kinda interesting, but appears like there's no room for bigger tires

 

I don't think any other automaker;
- Lost 5 billion dollars on launch
- Suffered numerous recalls
- Had forced layoffs
- Sexual harassment lawsuit
- Class action lawsuit
- IP theft lawsuit
- Dropped an entire trim level
- Etc...

 

Every manufacturer is getting impacted by higher costs from their suppliers and in turn showing smaller profits and also losses. Which “numerous” recalls are you referring to? Numerous means “great in number, many” so I’m sure you have quite a list. IP theft seems to be a fairly common accusation among many new EV manufacturers including Tesla, Rivian, Fisker, Karma, Delorean, Xpeng, and I’m sure others. Sexual harassment also is fairly common in all industries. I don’t consider “dropping a trim level” a bad thing because it allows them to focus on efficiency rather than complexity. They could always come out with that trim level again, if they feel there is demand for a lower cost product.

 

Other than the money loss, which is not lost so much as invested into creating the required infrastructure to produce and distribute the vehicles, none of that is isolated to Rivian. As I mentioned before, it took Tesla 18 years to make a profit over the course of a year. Tesla posted a $2.24 billion loss as recently as 2017. Rivian has had two recalls effecting a total of 680 vehicles. They did layoff staff but no one involved with manufacturing the vehicles and plan to hire more workers to add a second shift on the assembly line. Lawsuits are part and parcel of any business these days and don’t concern me.

 

So I guess you're not going to get a Rivian?

 

That or he is still bitter that he bought shares at $179
