I'd rather have a 1st gen Tacoma over a 2nd gen Ranger, although they are both decent platforms, and I like them both over a 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma.

The 1st Tacoma was designed to compete against the Ranger, and Nissan Hardbody that's what Toyota had in their sight's for the NA when that truck went to market.

Why couldn't Toyota build a Hilux, or world market midsize that competed against the Ranger?

All of Toyota's Pick Ups, prior to the Tacoma were fine to compete against Ford, Nissan, GM, and who ever else was around at the time.

Toyota could have built a world market midsize, that was specifically for the NA market, and built it in NA. Like Ford has done with the current, and up coming Ranger, to avoid the chicken tax.

Had that have been the case, I think the 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma could have possibly been better than what they are now.

Wouldn't the Tundra be a better truck than the Tacoma? I know it's a bananas to brocolli comparison, and not that applicable due to one truck being a midsize, and the other a fullsize. The Tundras always seem more advanced than the Tacom, and they are a generation behind the Tacoma.

Another good GPS app is Maverick. I use that on my Android phone at the lake to find people's locations from the water, where traditional map programs always try to put you on a road. It stores lat/long waypoints as well, which is also handy in the wilderness.

OP glad to see you have a sense of humor and are able to take these responses with a grain of salt. This is a fun forum when approached with the right attitude! And yes, I too remember the old Thomas Guides. That's what I first used when I learned to drive back in the '80's. It was almost magical how you would get the end of a page, then flip to another page in a completely different part of the book and the map just continues. I always wondered what it would be like to take one of those things apart and lay all the pages out flat into one big map. You'd need a space the size of a gym to do that probably...maybe even bigger.

The frame is better steel. 3rd gen is safer in an accident. The door/roof frames are stronger, 3rd gen is 1” higher stock vs 2nd gen, interior is 100 times nicer. Quite a few differences actually, you mentioned some of them.

Not saying 2nd gens sucks, they are great trucks but there have been a lot of improvements over 2nd gen.

3rd gens are more advanced than a 2nd gen and they could be better in that respect. I hear higher praise for the 2nd gen, and there were more configurations and options available. RC, 5lug, XRunner more availability of manual transmissions on different trim levels.

Sure 3rd gen offers more standard equipment, and more tech, but 2nd gen offered more options for the time than the 3rd gen does now. Compared to other vehicles and common features.
2019 Tundra was available with LED headlights, LEDs didn't make their way to the Tacoma until 2020. There may be more example than that.

Look at a 2022 Tundra, compared to a 23 Tacoma, way more advanced. Which may or may not be a good thing.
More compact, and a much simpler vehicle over all.

Wish I could say I never saw a picture of a Hilux in the same shape, but I have.

Only thing that concerned me was the 4.0 vs the 3.5 from the 2nd and third gen. My 3rd gen was gutless when i first got it but OV tune fixed that.

Def had the most fun In a 1st gen, small enough to fit anywhere, just solid trucks all around. Not as capable for towing and hauling, slower, and more bare bones than the newer trucks. But just a blast to drive

Had a first gen in '95 thought it so was cool, Dark Green with gold "waves",2WD, no access cab, 5 speed, bucket seats and a sliding rear window. Took my Dad fishing to Mammoth, Ca had a 6 pack cooler on the floor between his feet great ride just the 2 of us. Met family members for a fishing trip. I don't remember the sound system or tech.(am/fm Cassette?) so we talked the entire trip. If we factor that in, I know where my vote goes for best Gen. I think this thread is done, not looking for responses

PS My Pops is still with us.

    Dang didn't realize I've owned all 3
