What did you get? And what are you using for CAD/CAM?

I got a Shapeoko Pro, so very much a home-grade machine, not too fancy. For other modeling jobs in the past, I've used onshape for CAD. I'll likely start with the Carbide3D suite of CAD/CAM with this machine so I can at least get a baseline of what it can do with the recommended software before I mess around with others.

I hear those are killer - I may get one for my shop - I had to give up the cnc router my company had loaned me and there are times I miss it.

Wow - did you do the tapers with the compound feed? Those came out beautiful. And there's nothing better than making a part and putting it on your truck, imo.

Oh man that's a big question. What do you want to make? Assuming a traditional mill is the best tool it depends on if you have the time to go look at used machines. Great machines can be had for the cost of moving them if you know how to find and evaluate them. Not my talent. Ha ha. New, you will spend a lot of money. And the mill itself is about half the expense... all the tooling is the other half. Check out the machines on the Grizzly site. They have their stuff (not great) to southbound machines, which are pretty nice. it will give you a sense of the price range though...

Those are some serious machines. When you set up two vices like that do you indicate them both in or clamp them both to a big straight bar and indicate them as a unit? I just tried a dual vise setup for the first time and somehow fucked up my first try.

Thanks, I love fixturing. It when i get to go all out and try some stuff i wouldn't normally get to do.

i have a 2ft piece of 1x3 ground stainless that was bought for a EDM fixture but never got used.

I’ll clamp it in both vices loose on the table, tighten 1 toe clamp and indicate in both vices at the same time.

then any additional vices I’ll clamp the bar in a vice thats already clamped then clamp in the vice thats loose, verify its 0 then clamp it down

i just setup 4 vices within .0005” over 50 inches earlier this week using this method.

    Very cool.
I had to get rid of my 1960 something LeBlond when I sold my shop. It had a 5ft bed and a taper attachment.

@cory02taco sent me one of these off of his boat windshield for his boat his grandfather gave him many years ago for a pattern. He was missing 2 so I made him 4 new ones so they’d all match.

Little CNC, little manual milling, lot of hand work to finish. 316 stainless.
