Caution to the wind today, replaced my siped 235/85/16 E Duratracs with yet another set of siped 235/85/16 E Duratracs.

Best tires for my work truck seeng year round FSR, drill trails and highways. Snow, ice, mud, rock, powdery dust, rutted old tracks and all combinations of above. Don't tax the crappy gearing on our trucks either.

I'll add that when I was working in the jungles of central America, we spent just as much time winching skinny tired hiluxs as we did pickups with super swampers and our Unimog with paddles.

Buy what works for where you drive.

Oh boy is it that time of year again where we start arguing about skinny vs wide?

That's kinda cherry picking. Many heavy equipment have skinnies such as telehandlers, graders, articulated dump trucks, loaders, etc.

Hell even many of the heavy load dump truck used in mining run skinnies (dually in the rear though).

Many, if not all, old school land Rover vehicles in Africa that are used for full time safari tours use skinnies. Which is saying a lot imo

Edit: I do agree that if you're carrying super heavy loads then a wider tire is essential. But a Tacoma will never fall into this category.

wouldn't a rock crawler on 40 x 12.5's be a skinny tire? Height to width ratio makes rock crawlers and off road cars on skinnier tires than a 255/85. Hell class 10 cars are running 37 x 10's. Long live the skinnies!

Ya old tractors that spend more time in a shed than farming. Dude thats why so many tractors are always stuck in the mud have you ever actually worked a farm or been to a mine? Thats why they run dual wheels.....

Check out this article of the benefits and why farmers switch to fat tires

What weight would you consider super heavy?

40s usually come in a 13.5 and 42+ come in 14.5. Most tires maintain about 1:3 width to diameter ratio. Class 10s run a 35x10.5 tire, they also only weigh 2000lbs, basically a SXS at that point.

Ive provided objective evidence, even included links, pictures and high level physics of why. You ignore facts with your own ignorant opinion. I’ve provided more than all of the counter arguments that bring nothing other than “your wrong because I like my tires”

Maybe take a break dude this discussion is clearly beyond you and you seem more keen to stir the pot :stirthepot:

@JoeCOVA the tractors you posted, and most tractors are designed for specific purposes. Tall skinny tires are incredibly useful in a farm, as are the super wide LGP tires you posted. It’s all about what you are trying to do. Most “do it all” tractors are on the skinnier side of things because on a farm that’s more appropriate for the majority of the time, pending your crops. As for mining vehicles, sure the tires are wide, but they are also 6+ feet tall, so I would guess (I’ve never measured) that they would be considered “skinny” based on the aspect ratio. The duallys are generally for tire punctures, and maintaining the stability of the machine carrying such a heavy load.
And before you ask, I grew up on a farm and currently work with heavy construction vehicles and mining equipment.

edit: it’s all about what you use a tire for, each individual here has made that determination for themselves. This may not be the hardcore crawler thread, but we all came to the decision based on reading all kinds of threads and the type of roads we drive/look we want to achieve.

    High level physics?

There are definite applications for low ground pressure applications. Farming being one of them as compaction is a huge detriment to seed germination. There is also a trend, regulatory, toward low ground pressure vehicles in forestry. Hence the growth market in Forwarders. In mining, low ground pressure also has advantages in stacking materials.

    Jungle mud and fat tires.

I would also, for arguments sake, say that the massive tire you posted above is a “low profile” tire and those are known to be garbage off road. So again, there is a time and place for every tire

I drive heavy machinery. They don't have wide tires (for the size of the machine), yet they can if the engineers wanted to. For my machine, designed to carry a lot of weight (20 tons) it's all about contact pressure with the ground to sustain traction even in slippery conditions (oil mixed with water on the ground).

Let's see some people putting there skinnies to work how about. Even though 37x12.5s aren't necessarily skinny
