Had a 01 Jetta tdi that went 300k on the first clutch. You can’t count how many shifts you’ve made based upon miles driven.

My feathers haven’t been ruffled. This a thread with an interesting subject I don’t see 100 times a day. It’s not every day I get to talk to a race car driver. :)

My 02 Jetta went to the grave at 400,000km on the original clutch. I drove it with zero concerns about the longevity of the clutch.

You mean to down shift? A jake (exhaust) brake on a heavy diesel ya, but in a passenger vehicle, never heard of such. Please share details of where this applies.

If you mean to coast to a light, ya I have heard of anti-coast laws... don't recall details. Never mind the above in this case.

My argument wasn't that an improper gear is okay - my argument was that HT shifting - totally not necessary to get in the proper gear.

I'm referring to coasting to a stop in neutral.

In all the years I’ve been driving manual pickups, not once I felt unsafe while braking and turning in slippery/frozen conditions shifting gears normally.

Maybe when driving too fast for conditions heel toe is necessary but definitely not with normal driving, in my opinion anyways.

Especially when upshifting during a drag race, right? Lol, that was the dumbest thing uttered in that movie

    Hahaha!

Yeah they said few things in that movie that were very interesting to say the least.

Also, every car they drove had like 15 gears, constant shifting.

Why not drive a MT like most do? Leave it in the gear you are in before braking, use the brakes to slow or stop then shift to the proper gear to accelerate? I was taught that brake pads and shoes were much cheaper than clutches.

I agree. I see no need to heel toe whatsoever, unless it’s simply just for fun.

Like how fast are these guys driving?:)

They want to hear their shitty sounding straight piped car crack and pop as they slow. Also need to let everyone know they drive a manual. There's no need for this at all on the street.

For me, the situation I feel like I'd want to heel-toe is not approaching a red light, but rather a light which just turned green a few seconds ago and the line of cars is just starting to move.
I need to slow down in order to not rear end anyone, but I'm won't be coming to a complete stop, and I will soon be accelerating.
I'm on the brakes to slow down and it would be nice to be able to downshift to the gear I want to be in without letting off the brakes.

There's one particular intersection on my drive home from work everyday that is at the bottom of a hill/overpass and you can't see if the light is red or green or how many cars are in line until you crest the top of the hill. Coming down the hill while needing to slow down and downshift can be a little nerve-wracking sometimes because when I let off the brakes to clutch and blip I'm coasting and almost feels like I'm accelerating down the hill.

Of course, I get by just fine going that way every day and have yet to rear end anyone, but that is one situation where I wish I could heel-toe downshift.
