    You've never had to emergency brake then apply throttle?

    You can absolutely be hard on the brakes, then when you're done slowing down clutch in to downshift to the appropriate gear. Or you can already be in 2nd or 3rd gear and immediately be back on the gas. I'm not arguing that it's always an emergency life or death situation or a right or wrong way of doing it. I'm just saying it's a useful skillset to have even in street driving.

    Automatic transmissions do it and humans have been doing it before automatic transmissions were popular.

    Maybe take a closer look what you posted;) Post like yours definitely don’t add any value to this thread.

    Nobody said it’s wrong. This is a forum and you will hear different opinions, obviously. I was genuinely curious and I asked the guy why he prefers he’ll toe, no harm done. Not sure what the issue is here. We are actually having some fun with this here.


    Also, this is why we get manual so we get to choose how we use it.

    :confused: I'm still not entirely sure I understand the problem for which the OP has engineered a solution. If there's a situation which requires that much rapid foot action, why not simply float the gears and use one foot fully on each pedal?

    I like the comments that "most drivers" don't even downshift and why would you.... this thread is simply turned into a pissing match over driving styles.

    To each their own, if you want to downshift - do it, if you don't - then don't, heel/toe or ease it into gear - whatever..... we all enjoy driving stick, and we all arrive at our destination (ideally LOL).

    Absolutely and I've got almost a million miles behind the wheel. 96% of that manual transmissions. I somehow manage to drive an 18 speed with 600 hp and 2000 lbs of torque and never burned up a clutch with a GVW of 164,000 lbs.

    Managed to be in the right gear and even gone around corners at 16,000 lbs with very VERY little of that over the rear axles. Motoring around in a MT Tacoma is literally thoughtless for me.

    I never said HT was wrong, I never said I can't do it - I just said I never found it NECESSARY (please understand what NECESSARY means - as in there's no other way to make this work other than HT) - even in an emergency braking situation to do. If I need to hard brake - left on clutch, right on brakes. Jam them to the radiator while selecting the appropriate gear. Then - hard on the gas - no need for anything on the brake pedal is there? Right foot hits throttle, left modulates the clutch. Done.

    There’s no need to take your foot off the brake to down shift. Just shift it. In the situation you are referring to I would likely hold the clutch in while decelerating, shift to the lower gear I want, and let the clutch and go. I see no need for heal and toe.

    I do hope people aren’t going to read this thread and then go out and try heal and toe for the first time in traffic. Please go find a parking lot or track.

    I honestly didn’t think heal and toe was a technique used outside rally car racing. I also have a vague memory of it being used to control the car; not just shift it. There are some advanced techniques in trials and hard enduro that involve using the brake and throttle in combination as well.

    My dad always said this, about brake pads being cheaper to replace than clutches, and it's definitely true. I've changed out brake pads on several of my vehicles, but changing a clutch requires dropping the transmission which I don't have the time or equipment to do (even if you had a lift and transmission jack, it would be a day's worth of labor vs. 2 hours).

    Lol. I used to race. The only reason to shift that way In a Tacoma is for nostalgia. The rec hang will keep you from a proper shift, then the vehicle itself refuses to be thrown into corners like a sports car. Good luck op. Have fun but don't try to justify something that is unjustified.
