I hit a small deer in my 2017 Tacoma, V6, 2WD, SR5, with 75k miles on it. There is some front end damage and all but the passenger dash airbags deployed. The radiator is smashed but aside from that, it seems like mechanically nothing else was damaged, it still runs. The insurance called it a total and it was paid off, but I am left with the truck. My question is how do I go about selling it? Should I make any repairs before trying to sell it? Also I have no clue what it's worth with this type of damage.

If the insurance company wrote it off, there must be damage to it that you aren't seeing... something that makes the repairs out weigh the value of the truck. With that in mind... it is tough to give a value to it as it sits, especially unseen.

When the insurance pays out, don’t they own it at that point? To my understanding they take the truck unless you worked out some partial deal.

I know if the car winds up being towed to a body shop usually the insurance company gets the car and the body shop has the option to buy it off the ins company to sell as salvage. Never heard of a car being totaled and then you get to keep it. Did you drive it home after the accident?

As others have stated. The insurance company will take possession of the vehicle. Most likely they will send to an auction where you could buy it back at a discount.

    Oh look, another mod....
I can help you get rid of that deer meat! I'm always on the lookout for backstrap and ground venison. :)

P.S. Glad you're okay OP. Remember, it's just metal and glass. All that matter is that you made it out alive and okay.

The air bag and dash repair is probably what caused the write off. That shit is expensive to repair, let alone the rest of the front end...

insurance paid it off, it's theirs,,, now if you bought it back from your insurance, then "what to do with it?" is a plan you should have already had in place, before you bought it back.

A lot of times when the insurance pays it off they can give an option of you keeping it at some low cost , air bag deployment can lead to it being totaled , at least in my area , I would repair it an get a salvage title , keep it or sell it
