OK - is it possible to get something copied, cut or ordered? My wife wants a duplicate key, full-size. Yes, we know the key in the FOB would work. Still, is this possible, and is it expensive?

There was a similar thread about the tailgate key a short time ago. I tried an aftermarket key, which did not fit. I ended up calling my dealer. He took my VIN and had the key cut and mailed to me. Voilla!

Try searching for PN 69515-0K130 and having a local locksmith cut it. I've been putting off getting a second one cut for myself and this is a reminder for me so thanks.

I have a MT that uses a full size key, and had a 'dumb' key cut that would open doors, tailgate, etc. but not start the truck. No reason why a locksmith couldn't cut a full-sized key to work.

I purchased a generic full size Ilco LXP90-P from a local locksmith and had them cut it. Works great for the doors and tailgate

Curious what the goal is here. Does the tailgate lock help out?

Speaking for myself, I was concerned about tailgate theft. I checked into installing the OEM electric tailgate lock that interfaces with the key fob. Looking at cost and difficulty of installation, I decided that I would just manually lock the tailgate as I did with my Tundra. My Tacoma came with one door/tailgate key. In that I have two fobs I thought it best to have two keys. I'm aware of the fact that there is a small key contained within each fob but figured that after continued use it might wear and at some point become loose to the point it might detach. Also, with a touch of arthritis, the larger grip surface of the key is easer to utilize.

Sounds like you need a tailgate lock actuator. No need to worry about locking or unlocking when you can do it with your remote door lock controller. I just did my own...

Or there is the OEM one... available through Toyota or a Pop & Lock.

Exactly this. Wife isn't going to be pulling the key out of the FOB. Just wont. Until I get another key cut, I put a SaBellCo anti-theft lock on the tailgate. I think the product is very well designed. I admit to forgetting to lock the tailgate already. YMMV

Tailgate power lock is one of my favorite mods. OEM kit is great. Super easy install. Just takes some time. For older dudes, you can likely direct someone younger and willing to help out to do the zip ties, that’s where most of the time is spent.

A lock to prevent theft of the tailgate is also great. @christian06 makes an excellent one and can color match it. The SaBellCo option is also nice, more visible for people who like that sort of thing. Pairs nicely with a cat guard for those who live or park in environments with theft concerns.

Some have taken a further step of a tailgate lock disable switch so that they can override the auto lock / unlock of the OEM harness at the intercept between tailgate and truck body.

I found it cumbersome to unlock with a key when I wanted to open the tailgate. But I had a tonneau and now have a shell so I couldn’t just plop stuff in the bed over the rail.

    ^^ This....

I was like the OP and thought Im not going to waste money on a remote lock when I have a perfectly good key. That lasted about 3 weeks. I work very early, few hours before sun comes up, and fumbling around in the dark trying to find the keyhole was driving me nuts. That OEM remote lock is a lifesaver. I highly recommend it. With some searching, it can be had for about 130ish with the freeship code. Install is also pretty easy. Took maybe 1.5 hours, but I was also taking my time. Seriously, just get it now, you wont regret it. Must have IMO.

FWIW - for my 22 Sport, I purchased a tailgate blank from ebay p/n 69515-0K130. It cost me $25 to have a locksmith cut it. It was an expense I shouldn't have had to pay IMHO.
I read somewhere, not sure where, that there is some program for Toyota to provide the 2nd key to owners.
Can't seem to put my hands on it. Is it real? Has anyone gotten notified their key was available?

Well, I may be confused as to the program by Toyota. I think that may be for a 2nd FOB key?
