I’m with the rest. Something isn’t right.
I’d keep an eye on the coolant until you can have your mechanic look at it.

Random woman came up as I was pulling in at a car show and wanted to pose in zombie gear!

Lots of things could be going on. Low coolant certainly. But it could also be a faulty thermostat, a restricted radiator or heater core. I would start with coolant level. Low level also leads to too much air in the system. So it's a double whammy

Personally, I wouldn't be driving it until it's been evaluated

    Bad luck?

My friend who is a mechanic is 99% sure it's air bubbles, because the coolant was just flushed and then he had to use a vacuum pump four days later because it was slightly overfilled. The truck is showing no signs of running hot or any other issues.

Yeah, I’m to the point where I almost want to buy 3 of everything now. Throw the 1st one away because it is bad right out of the box. Don’t even install it.
Put the 2nd one on, and keep the 3rd for when the 2nd goes bad.

Quality Control has been nonexistent in the last 2 years. And I’m not even sure if the manufacturers care :notsure:

Thermostat got stuck closed about three weeks ago and caused the truck to overheat in a gas station parking lot ten miles from my house. I cranked the heat and got it home. The backup of coolant caused the heater bypass pipe to crack. It was a plastic heater pipe and Toyota is now selling a metal one as it's replaced. The truck has been running fine for two weeks. My mechanic did a leak down test and a compression test to be sure the head gasket was good.

If the gauge was in the red...then it was too hot, even if just briefly. Strange that there would be air in it after 3 weeks. These trucks do a pretty goog job of burping small amounts of air on their own. But if the coolant is low then there is certainly air in the system.

Fingers crossed that it's not a head gasket or cracked head. I know it doesn't matter now, but you're doing it no favors by driving it

You don't think the siphoning would have put air in the system? The truck shows no signs whatsoever of leaking. There's no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. The truck sounds healthy at idle and under acceleration.

I let the truck sit over an hour at the car show, and I added some coolant when it cooled down. Currently sitting in the truck with the heat cranked...

My friend who used to be a mechanic and does all of his own maintenance thinks the truck is fine, but Bill is worried I might have damaged the engine.
