    On a European Maxxis page they had 38.5’s, which had my curiosity.

    It just barely touches the cab mount at full lock, which has a light trim on it. I'm going to do a more extreme cut and plate on it today.

    Definitely wanted to let y’all know that I am no longer on 37’s. I realized and accepted that I am not able to put in the work to get the 37’s to fully cycle & for the truck to be as reliable as I’d like it to be. I sold the 5 37’s on beadlocks to a hood guy & grabbed some very OVERLANDER spec scs wheels on 315/70/17 ko2’s. The truck does really well with this overall “35’ ish” size tire and light wheels especially as a family vehicle that I zip around town in daily. Will keep following all the rad stories of tubbing and cutting to reliably run big tires on these trucks but I am so happy to be back on the “35’s” and with the way I have built the rest of the truck it does really well even with the smaller tires. I’d still like to get a tundra rack and run the 35’s but will be a while before I can invest that money into the steering. For now, shes getting the job done & all the hammering I did for 37’s really help clear the 35’s

    Yo guys! I've been following this thread for quite a bit now, and I'm finally pulling the trigger on some 37s but what I've been reading is no need for 5.29s for our 2nd gens? Just stick with 4.88s correct?

    I'm 2wd btw 2005 sport model long bed if that matters lol (on 35s)

    It was recommended to me by my friend who used to work for East Coast Gear Supply that due to my trucks weight 5.29's were preferred. I'm also at 8500ft....

    Wrong. 5:29 provide an unbelievable benefit even on 35’s which I have ran for quite a while like that. Even at 70mph on the freeway with 5:29’s and 35’s I’m barely at 2600rpm and the POWER of the gearing of 5:29 is greater than 4:88. There is generally an “internet census” that sides with 4:88 for 35’s and even larger but I don’t find that to be logical after discussing this matter with experts like Ken Francisco & other rock crawler fabricators that know way more than me. If the argument against 5:29 is “the teeth are tiny and more prone to breaking” then the question should be who set up the gears and with what tolerances because that is simply not real world truth. This is why many rock crawler older Toyotas run 5:29 gears all day on big boy tires - they work and they work well and they still don’t spin too high of RPM’s for city trucks. My truck zips around town and crawls trails so wonderfully with 5:29 ands 35’s and it did so even better with 37’s which I retired and went back to 35’s for other practical reasons.

    5:29 are a very appropriate and powerful gear ratio choice for 35’s and 37’s. It’s the truth, and even at 75mph on the freeway i barely spin 2800rpm in my 4.0v6 5spd AT and it isn’t “screaming” by any means. The 4.0 v6 can do this all day long and it’s not annoying or really a big deal IMO. 2600 is the sweet spot at 70mph but I frequently do 75 also and even up to 80 for passes and such.

    The mathematically correct gear for a 2nd gen on 37's is 4.88. I installed 5.29's because my truck tows often, hauls 500+ lbs of tools everyday, and the math doesn't account for a much taller vehicle/lift (8.5" on my truck) and the increased wind resistance. My truck is over-geared if it were empty and not towing but it isn't used that way. GPS'ed 70 mph = 2,500 RPM.

    Using what “math”? Because a direct apples to apples comparing stock gearing to 31’s on 3:73 vs 35’s on ______ I’m not sure that a direct x between duplicating identical stock gearing is the idea. Being slightly over geared is optimal for those who off-road and don’t spend most of their time touring / road tripping / driving on roads

    I also lurk on this thread and reading the recent comments kind of validates my opinion that people in 37s use different gearsets in a small gear ratio range depending on their vehicle setup and intended purpose of the vehicle. And comfort level of xxx/rpm @70mph is subjective too.

    @singletrack_ftw @DG92071
    Would being supercharged and having a bit more controllable "ommph" change your opinion about your ideal gear ratio on 37s?
