Without getting too far off topic, how involved are links? I feel this is a “if you have to ask” kind of question.

I think JD is working on a trailing arm kit that will take the mystery out of it. I watched some good busted knuckle videos that really broke it down into digestible pieces. I crunched the numbers in the four link calculator and that was cute and all, but a good bit of it comes down to packaging.

 

The domino effect is significant with trailing arms. Do you 3 link it, 4 link it, how long of arms, cross members, relocate fuel tank, frame reinforcements, shock mounts, back half it, full cage, different axle, new brake system? Etc. When people consider going to links do it for better performance than what they feel they can get out of leaf springs. All the things mentioned above could be done with leaf springs. But if performance is the driving force than everything should be evaluated.

IMO links are only going to open an entire new wormhole. Your rear will now outrun your front, even with a solid LT kit, with no truly viable options for the front to keep up with the rear. Which would annoy the ever living hell out of me and would result in the front being chopped off.

Unless your just trail riding, if your on the east coast and not going fast. A simple mid travel front end with softer springs and easy 3/4 link setup would carry the ass of the truck almost anywhere.

 

As would SUA for significantly less. Don’t get me wrong, links are killer. But leaf springs can go pretty far.

Would it actually be significantly less? Harry’s SUA setup is about $4k or so. How much are links really costing, let’s assume a 3 link setup? I can’t imagine it’s anymore than that, at least not “significantly” so.

 

I think it’s actually less about price and more about abilities. Not everyone can/would build their own link setup. Doing a sua swap is really easy with the only difficult parts being welding the shock mounts and spring perches. Not saying the welding is that difficult but lots of people don’t have welders at home. Also, how many people are willing to dump the factory fuel tank in favor of a fuel cell? I think the farther you go away from a stock configuration you see less and less people willing to do it.

 

Exactly, it’s not about cost so much as it is about the skill involved. SUA is more desirable from that aspect. But looking at only the dollar amount, a basic link setup seems like it would be right in the ballpark of an SUA setup. It goes back to the goals you’re trying to achieve with the truck.

 

I think I spent around 1500 on the DOM and dual triangulated kit from RuffStuff plus the mini truck mount. Plus shocks and a fuel cell (which is in the scrap pile right now) that’s not counting the tube bed and probably a bunch of little stuff that went into it

 

I think everyone wants links but the packaging it takes to have a no compromise setup is too much for many of us. I’ve nearly pulled the trigger on the jd fab sua setup a few times but I’m concerned that it may not be the best solution for me. If I didn’t occasionally tow a travel trailer I’d probably have it here by now.

 

Iv towed tons with mine. Including me hauling my dads tractor around to scrape my driveway. Not to mention this is the standard pack with the hangers in the middle position.
