Just finished these stacked potato bins for my dad out of scrap wood from the greenhouse. Not beautiful, but I'm pleased with the sturdiness and functionality. :)

It would have been better if you had used Dominos to fasten the boards all together!

The space between the boards is for better air flow.

Also the only tools I really have to work with right now are drills and a circular saw.

That said, I was not a familiar with dominoes, so thanks for bringing it up.

You really NEED a domino. They are not expensive at all!

Dont worry about the Domino unless you want to start your journey down the Festool-inaire money pit or if you really hate holding money. It is a good investment if you are making a bunch of floating tenons. I would classify the Festool products as middle range professional products. Do not get me wrong, I've heard nothing but good things about 'most' of the Festool products and it would be well worth the money but you'll be fine with a Dewalt biscuit joiner until you decide to jump into that market. If you're serious about getting heavily into woodworking without investing a ton of money, check out this video:

There are other makers out there with recommendations on what tools you might want to invest in for starting off woodworking.

$1k to get started? Where's the fun in that?

I'm sure you can scour the FB marketplace or Craigslist for old hand-me-downs for a good deal but there are the definite 'buy once, cry once' tools like Incra or Woodpeckers. Having accurate layout is imperative to ensuring parts and joints line up the way they should. A good pullsaw and hand plane if you want to put some sweat equity into your projects. Investing in a way to keep edged weapons sharp is another place to buy once, cry once. I wish I just broke down and bought the Tormek T-4 instead of investing in wet stones that do nothing but grow mold during the months where I'm not using them. Getting some nice engineering try squares is fairly inexpensive, I grabbed a set of 3 from I think, iGaging ... a 6", 4", and 2". I use the 4" the most from everything to ensuring my jointer fence is square, to ensuring my table saw blade is 90*. I used it to calibrate my miter saw ... it's invaluable.

I also recommend telling your friends about your new hobby and that you're looking for tools. You'd be surprised how many people outside your direct circle know somebody that might have something for you.

Very true. I have quite a few serviceable tools I’d gladly give to someone starting out. I’ve upgraded quite a bit over the years.

Make sure to reach back out AFTER you've acquired said tools, to let them know you dropped your new found hobby. You'll quickly become the "let me borrow that" guy :anonymous:

Hey folks! I’ve been slowly building-out my office. I have finished the custom floor, trim, cabinets, and put a first coat of paint on. The idea is to make a matching oak wall desk spanning the 10 ft across cabinets.
    E54ED7C3-53DB-4D6F-B5B0-FD09EE22C138.jpg

I found some S4S lumber that looks great and should span the whole thing. The problem is I don’t have a metric ton of clamps. Any pointers for getting a flat glue up with minimal clamps? It’ll be about 25” deep and 10’ long, so ideally I’d have a bunch of clamps, but really not super feasible.

Ah, sorry my question is more for clamping pressure along the 10 ft. I have 4 clamps long enough for the 25” deep desk. Maybe a series of ratchet straps between the clamps? I guess another cheap alternative is to invest in some 36” pieces of 1/2” pipe and get some pipe clamps? 4 pipe clamps + 4 regular clamps. I just priced-out the pipe and pipe clamps themselves for $95.

Ok, I am going to offer advice, that I sometimes fail to take myself, then kick myself in the butt for ignoring it.

Buy the dang clamps. Do it right the first time. If you had any idea how much labor and material I have wasted having to go back and do stuff over. It is really cheaper to just do it right.

In addition then you will have the stuff to do it right the next time too.

I 150% agree with this. If you don't have it, buy it. Or borrow? Do what it takes to do it right the first time.

Just ordered the pipe clamps . I typically live by this philosophy (hence the pile of Festool sitting in the garage), but for this one I figured I won’t do many 10’ glue ups. But… I guess you can never have too many, right? Now to figure out how I’m going to build this entire desk in that room. It won’t fit up the staircase.
