Where did you get the boot retainer? Is that the only piece you need to connect the Hilux knob to the SR boot?

I purchased the boot retainer from a fellow TacomaWorld member:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...se-with-aftermarket-shift-knobs-at-mt.630774/

I bought the Hilux knob from Amazon; and it was shipped direct from Taiwan. https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Leat...ix=hilux+oem+leather+shift+knob,aps,71&sr=8-4

The knob screws directly onto the shift shaft. No need for adapters, etc. The retainer attaches to the boot, not the knob. It fit pretty well, although I did improve/tighten the fit by wrapping some cloth electrical tape around to shaft to act as a shim.

Finally finished up my shift knob setup. TRD FJ Special Edition black and red knob. Have to provide a VIN for Toyota to sell it to you, so I found a random FJ SE on bring a trailer and used that.

At first did the grommet mod but I didn’t really liked the way it looked. I bought a Gaffney ES boot adapter, but it didn’t work well for me. It didn’t stay down on the shifter cane properly. So I ordered the 7r41lbr34k3r adapter from Etsy. I was going to get that one right off the bat, but the shop was on vacation and I didn’t know when that would end. I thought I had a problem with the Trailbreaker adapter not working either (wanting to rise up) but turns out I didn’t have it properly secured to the chrome collar, which ruined the way it sat.

Now with a fixed Trailbreaker adapter and the TRD FJ SE knob, I am happy! The knob is much nicer to use than stock and looks killer. I have no interest in a short-throw shifter so this completes any shifter related projects I wanted to do.

Don't know who told you about the VIN thing, you can literally just order one.

    Looks good though

3 or 4 of the different Toyota dealers I looked at had disclaimers for the black knob said that you had to provide a VIN or else the order would be cancelled. I ended up buying from sparks parts who did not have that disclaimer (they were the best price) but to avoid any order cancelling I went ahead and provided a VIN to them just in case. The dealers that had the disclaimer I figured were legit and would not ship it unless I provided one.

I know the gray FJ knob does not ever require a VIN though. But I didn’t want the light gray in my truck that doesn’t have any light gray anywhere. I did consider that one too though.

Hmmm That's weird. I've never heard of that at the dealership I work at. I'll ask if I have time Monday just to satisfy my curiosity

PTR26-35070-03 is the part number if it helps. It’s a set of FJ knobs, comes with a t-case one as well but obviously that’s no use for us folk.

I think they all do that to verify they’re selling you something that’ll fit. Had the same issue when I bought the 2020+ LED headlights for my 2017. They didn’t want to let me buy them because it didn’t check the box. A couple emails back and forth and they let it through.

Interesting. Did not have that issue at all with the headlights. I don’t recall if I even put a VIN on those, if I did it would have been my own which the lights would not have “fit”. For the knob I figured it’s because they don’t want everyone buying it since it’s special edition. Very few FJs got that knob, I figured they’re trying to keep it that way. Who knows.

Looks great. I've been pondering the black over the white-ish gray, but I'm probably going to be cheap and take that route since it's like half the price. Did you trying screwing the ball all the way down without the lock nut to see where it lines up? I'd like to take that approach and use some washers to get it to sit right. Would have to find a good size punch for that opening.

Thanks. I did not, I just used the supplied painted nut. My only complaint is the paint flakes off with practically no effort. I basically have a shiny nut under the knob now. The washer approach is not a bad idea but I like how secure a jam nut is.

I don't know if this affects those with a tune, but does anyone else feel like they have pulsing power/torque when they get on the gas after shifting to 2nd at low speeds?

I used to get it on upshifts, but adjusted my shift point to higher RPM so I get into 2nd around 2k now. If I had to slow down and shift to 2nd, for slow traffic or entering a parking lot or something, but I'm only at ~1000-1500 RPM or , when I try to accelerate the truck doesn't go smoothly, the power pulsates.

Well a month or two ago there was a situation where it did that and I took my foot off the accelerator pedal for a second and then got back on. After returning to the pedal I had perfectly smooth power and acceleration. It took me a while to build that into a habbit, but now I consistently will remove my foot from the pedal for about half a second and then get back on and every time I do that it's smooth with no pulsating.

Not sure if anyone else has tried this or if I'm the last one to figure it out, but if you haven't tried it, give it a try next time. The smooth power feels much nicer than the pulsating.

Stock, with TSB flash, or tuned, my Taco as always been smooth in the bottom end. Just on the Stock tunes, it was rather gutless for acceleration. It would hold speed and all, even up gentle grades.

There are things that can be done to the Stock tune to help as there are some really odd looking throttle maps there. You could be rocking up and down one of the odd cliffs that they put in there?

Click on the first Spoiler in the 1st Post to see the Stock primary throttle map:

Interesting. It does feel like it can't make up its mind on how much throttle/torque/power to use. It's a very consistent ~2-3hz pulsing, and it's always been there right at a certain sweetspot or unsweetspot of the RPM range in the low end.

Temporarily taking my foot off the pedal must give the computer a chance to think or reset and it's smooth when I get back on.

I gotta go for a ride with you in my truck behind the wheel and me in the passenger seat sometime. Now that I’m close enough, that’s on my list of things to do someday. Curious how normal my truck is compared to yours.

I almost forgot, I test drove a different truck before mine and it did the same pulsing thing.
