What was a normal price to pay for a used 3rd gen prior to covid?

I think I’m going to buy a 3rd gen to move up from my 2nd gen as soon as I can find a fair price on one under 100,000 miles. However I never looked at 3rd gen‘s at all until just the other day, so I don’t know what prices they were going for before all the madness. I am not in a rush so I am only going to buy when something comes up for a non-Covid-inflated price. Could anyone give me a perspective on what you would have normally paid for a few year old 3rd gen with say between 50-100k miles before the current price skyrocketing so i know what i’m looking for not to get ripped off?

In 2019 I paid $23,000 for a 2014 with 80,000 miles. Does that sound about right for the price/age/mileage range of getting a 3rd gen before covid?

 

I think you might be waiting awhile. I was shopping recently, too, and prices were nearly $40K for fairly basic TRDs with 50K+ miles. I didn’t want to wait so I paid a few bucks more and bought a new one that should arrive any day now.

 

I think you might be doing yourself a disservice by hunting prices from a few years ago and hoping to correlate it with the market now or in the near future. That market is what it is, and all anyone can do is guess. An educated guess might suggest that the market is currently softening, so values should go down.

In 2001 I made the mistake of buying a gently used Tacoma. It would have been way smarter to spend a few thousand more on a new one that someone else hadn't already farted in.

 

I remember looking at Tacos in 2018/2019 and used prices were in the mid 30k for nicely optioned TRD sport/off-road. For comparison, even backs then, brand new ones were only about a few thousand more once you factored in a negotiated price.

I got my 2020 Premium + Tech packaged Offroad for about $39k (10%off msrp) in 11/2019 and comparable used ones with 10-25k miles were going for around $37k. Hope that helps.

 

An idea would be to check kelley blue book to see how much the value of one is and the go off of that. I just got mine in july 2022. its a 2019 SR5 double cab with 21k miles. Window price was 33,500. Kelley blue book suggested between 28k-30k roughly. So this is just my opinion/suggestion check the value of them on kbb. Unfortunately dealers are adding a bunch of crap on top of the price

 

SO I just bought my 18 TRD pro. I think they run about 62cdn plus tax and freight so say 70 would be a very close guess. My 18 pro I paid 43 plus tax came to 49450cdn. I kept looking up pros for sale in Canada and I still do a month later. But I really think I am happy with what I got it seemed to be pretty well taken care of. If the 23 are out or soon it will be 5 years old had 66km so thats like 13km a yr. There is my honest rant

 

The normal price for a 2016-2018 Tacoma was sticker price or maybe 1-2k below.

You can't compare future markets to the past however. The change in both interest rates and inflation are going to make purchasing a very different experience to what it was last year and five years ago.

 

Yesteryear’s pricing isn’t going to work.
New ones cost considerably more, so that’ll drive up used pricing, that is forever in the books.
Now the market can, and probably will, soften some.

 

Best price I ever found, and I didn't look that hard was between 1 to 2k below MSRP on a 4x4 V6 SX package.

That was through e mail communication and absolutely no price matching. That wasn't good enough for me back then. Kind of when I lost interest on obtaining a 3rd gen.

I'd have to find a LR OR AC at MSRP for me to consider buying one, but I don't see that happening.

It's never going back down man. Prices now are the new normal. I traded in my 2018 Tundra last year, 50K miles, got $4K more than I paid for it.
So, whatever prices are now is how it is. Prices on used vehicles will eventually moderate as supply starts to outstrip demand, but even with interest rates going up for loans the demand is still higher than supply.

Stay away from used trucks unless you're getting one from an auction and plan on fixing ot. You rather buy a brand new one instead.

 

Are you saying that because of the price inflation going on now? Or just because of the gamble of buying used? I have owned three different used Toyota trucks and numerous other used vehicles. Never bought anything from a dealership before in my life. But yeah, with the price difference at this point I guess it could make sense. I don’t even know what a brand new tacoma goes for at a dealership right now

 

Why leave a 2nd Gen?

 

Because of the price inflation and dealers' greed. Nothing is wrong with buying a used one, but not this time. Unless if you find a great deal from. A private seller. There's no such thing as great deal at the dealer no more. These days you pay more for used trucks than a brand new one.

 

I sold my 2014 because it had a short bed and I wanted a long bed, so now I have a 2006 that was built during the head gasket issue era. And I was stupid and didn’t learn about the head gasket issue until I already bought the truck. It hasn’t gone out yet, but I know it’s coming eventually. So it’s just the fact that I would be better off putting $5000 into a new truck than I would be dumping it into a 20 year old high mileage truck for fix a blown head gasket, or more if it ends up totaling the engine when it happens. if the 2nd gen I had wasn’t smack in the middle of the head gasket issue era I would plan on keeping it until the wheels fell off

 

Well no, not all 2006 trucks will blow their head gaskets. 2005 I'd be more concerned about. 2006 is the year they addressed that issue.. and honestly a head gasket doesn't mean the end of the road even if it does go out.

I think you're going to be missing out on a lot of what the 2nd Gen has to offer. For one your transmission isn't going to make your riding experience wonky. And 2 I think you're going to miss the simplicity.

 

3-4 year old, 40-60K mi. TRD OR 4x4s were in the $31-35Kish range pre-covid. I ended up getting a new ‘21 in Nov. ‘20 for $39K (which was about $4K under sticker with the options on my truck). I’m glad I bought when I did. I think I’d pay more for my truck used now than when it was new!

 

Yeah just looking at used prices around me I would need to pay about $30,000 for a decent used 3rd gen. I guess I should go to my local Toyota dealer today to compare because I truly have no idea what I would need to pay for a new one after all the bullshit fees and tax
