Thinking I paid $100K for this gawd damn thing, and how many times had we had to stop on this trip and drink quad long shot grande in a venti cup half calf double cupped no sleeve salted caramel mocha latte with 2 pumps of vanilla substitute 2 pumps of white chocolate mocha for mocha and substitute 2 pumps of hazelnut for toffee nut half whole milk and half breve with no whipped cream extra hot extra foam extra caramel drizzle extra salt add a scoop of vanilla bean powder with light ice well stirred…

    That's a lot of coffee.

Not relevant to the Tacoma vs Rivian debate, but what if you was the owner operator of a rollback. There's no situation that an electric International MV chassis would be a better economic solution over a diesel MV chassis.

The initial cost would be higher, and the amount of down time while waiting to charge would cut into the amount of available time you have to earn money.

Except we are comparing an extremely sophisticated machine that is currently being developed to be even more efficient with an existing infrastructure to an equally complicated machine with a shoddy infrastructure, so the parallels between an organic method of transportation like a horse and motor vehicles makes no sense in this context.

A motor vehicle is a completely different concept from a horse.

A motor vehicle with a different engine is still a motor vehicle and it doesn’t represent the same shift in society you think it does.

It's still a monumental shift and one I would argue is just as disruptive, if not more so than a shift from horse to automobile.

The naysayers said we'd never get to high use of automobile, the parallels with some of the arguments on here are uncanny.

As opposed to Texas which I would say is worse?

Infrastructure needs upgrades for sure and will happen.

The Texas power grid loses power when there is a unprecedented winter storm.

The California power grid lose power when it’s hot.

Texas has taken steps to isolate their power grid from other states which has had detrimental impacts when there is a disaster.

California relies on other states because of its green decisions to not produce enough electricity.

I would say both states are equal opportunity stupid.

The comparison is ridiculous. An automobile has massive advantages over a horse. Even old cars were pretty damn good. I just took a drive in an almost 100yr old Model A (reliable af).

Gas vehicle do almost everything better than electric. It's a step backwards in a lot of ways. The only reason is to reduce green house gasses. For industrial applications like a semi truck, the torque might come in very handy too. Now let us count the negatives, which are many

I tend to agree from a 2020’s perspective. But imagine what it was like in 1900. Your horse could pull a wagon or give your kid a ride to school, where there was probably a hitching post but no parking lot. If the horse ran out of fuel, it could graze on some roadside weeds, no need to find one of three gas stations in your state or deal with a flammable fluid. And the exhaust emissions really helped your garden grow.it rarely got stuck in the mud or refused to start. And the Model A (which came along almost three decades after the first gasoline cars) only had a ten gallon fuel tank, so the range was a lot less than that of a Rivian. You know, almost any comparison can be made look good from either side. As one of the few folks on this thread who have driven a Rivian, I’ll say that it is very cool and I think all of you would enjoy driving it. Owning one, not sure at this point, but I will probably wait, not that I have any choice yet.

As they say time is money! Used to be a heavy equipment operator, couldn’t imagine having to wait around for the thing to charge. Excavate for 2-3 hours, charge for 30-45 minutes, if you’re lucky….repeat. Plus side guess you do billable hours to the customer…so you could sit around, drink coffee, argue with other knuckleheads on the inter google machine about nonsense during the down time and get paid for it.

first generation automobiles were crap, especially on muddy roads, with payloads, etc. Electric vehicles are starting out the same way. To think we won't be all electric within 50 years is just burying your head in the sand.

The first car was this (1886):

Within 20 years we had the Model T:

We've got a better start with electric cars due to technology advancements but to think that within 20 years we aren't going to have way more range, better charging and things that make them on par or better than ICE vehicles is nonsense.

I'm not an EV acolyte as I love my M3 and the sound it makes when I mash the skinny pedal but at least I can see where we are going and am not fighting it.

We'd be better off as a nation and a planet if we focused on developing national high speed rail.

Electric, diesel, mag lev, whatever just get us somewhere remotely close to European rail standards.

    100000000000% this

Loved taking high-speed rail last time I was in Spain and south France.

The downside is you also need the public transportation infrastructure in cities as well. Good bus and subway/trolley systems so when you get to your destination it's easy to get around.

Nice story but there are electric cars older than the gassers you posted. Electric isn't just starting out, it's been around. It's just that battery technology moves at a snails pace

At the time electric wasn't viable at all and was even more fledgling than fossil fuels. Battery technology hasn't needed to be upgraded for a long time until the majority of our handheld devices and modern electric cars started popping up. The changes over the last several decades are big compared to previously. We're going to see an increase in the tech for batteries that will be a massive improvement.
