cheap car, good gas mileage?

Looking for some input here. I started a new project that is 110 miles round trip, per day. All highway so it's not bad. 550 miles a week= 28,000 miles a year on my truck for just commuting! Worse off is I am only getting 16mpg on the highway with the tundra. I do have 300lbs of sandbags in the back that I am going to pull out...but, still I have to fill up twice a week.

I am not paying gas... but, I don't like putting a mile miles on my truck and hitting the gas station every 3 days.

What are my options for a vehicle that is quick, comfortable, 30mpg hw, big enough for tools, and can be had for 3000-5000 bucks?

I need something that is reliable! I had a 94 camry that would have fit the bill, but that is long gone. High miles and it started needing too much maintenance. If I find a low mile one, they will still be 5-6K What are your thoughts? Also prefer something larger than a Corolla.

quick comfy and cheap will be hard to find. I hate civic's, the seats kill my back. Camry or corolla

 

nissan altima....96-98....find one with less then 130k and put amsoil in it and run it!

 

civic-altima- corolla. should be able to find one of those under 4k with around 125kmiles. some new tires and a fresh oil change your good to go.

 

imprezas are....not good with gas...at all....unless u go N/A, even then, not too good

 

Smart Car

 

96-05 civic hx .... 43 - 45 mpg highway and no they are not hybrids and actually have decent power for delivering that great of mileage.

civics in general ... yes

not many people know about the hx's however, and the enthausiasts usually dont buy them cause they dont have as much performance potential as an EX does.

edit: just checked chicago craigslist for you and it looks like everything for sale is swapped ones.

edit #2: if you are willing to go older, the civic vx hatchback made from 92-95 also did good on gas.

 

Find another Camry.....will haul the Tools plus even the 6 will give you mpg's and the "RIDE" won't kill you in a month....."Box's" will give you great mpg's BUT talk to me about your back in a couple weeks.

#6 is sitting in the drive way with 135000,just made the round trip from NH/FT.Myers( loaded & 2 adults) avg..28 mpg (V-6) and I drove it like a Pepere' .....

What will be more trouble free past 100K miles- Auto or Manual?

 

My friend has a 96 accord with 159k with an auto tranny with no problems

 

actually the accord may be better for me. a little bigger, and a bigger gas tank. I will get a lot better range on a 17 gal. tank vs a 12 gal. tank. Even with reduced gas mileage...

 

i commute with an '86 honda accord to go to class everyday. Ill sell you mine for 2,000 lol. But in all seriousness, look for a honda. Mine has 331K and i can get over 400 on a tank(14.4gal)

 

do not NOT NOT buy any automatic trans accord from 90-02, 94-97 being the worst ones

i had a 94 ex and it blew up on me at 165k
friend had a 97 lx and his went twice by the time he got to 110k

also the auto ones get shit for mileage, 27 hwy tops .... my mom had a 91 ex 5spd and it got 29 - 32 hwy, we sold that at 140k and i seen it at the gas station the other day and asked how many miles were on it, 220k!! ... mentioned that it was my moms car from 99 - 05 and its been thru 2 owners since us.

another thing with accords is their in town mileage suck, they get around 18 - 20.

I would say an old Honda or Toyota. They seem to be the best as far as good mpg and reliability.
