What was a normal price to pay for a used 3rd gen prior to covid?

I'd consider posting this in the 2nd Gen forum as well. I'm sure a lot of people will give you some good advice.

yeah I love older vehicles and love driving the 2nd gens i’ve owned. but unfortunately the head gasket issue was fixed only partway through the 2006 production year, and mine was built before they enacted that fix. So it’s just as bad as a 2005. originally I was looking at a 2012 to 2015 to buy instead of this 2006, because those are the years that pretty much every kink was worked out with the 2nd gen. but people are asking so much for those late 2nd gens that for just a couple thousand more I could end up with a used 3rd gen with tens of thousands lower mileage

I think you've convinced yourself of an impending doom scenario that has a low chance of happening. But there are so many trucks out there that never had an issue and are still going strong.

Like honestly, you could spend the money on a new head gasket and save a lot on a car note in the long run.

 

yeah originally I was asking people if they think I should even bother selling my 2006 for something newer, and all the advice I’ve gotten everywhere I’ve asked that has been to just plan on having to spend the thousands of dollars to inevitably fix the head gasket issue or replace the engine. But from just a finance perspective, that makes no sense to me. Maybe if I had gotten my 2006 for a really good price, but I got it last year with 100,000 miles on it for $21,000. Ending up maybe a couple years down the line with a 20 year old truck and a rebuilt engine in it all out $26-30k for the whole thing just seems dumb compared to preventing that whole thing by selling my 2006 for what I can get back out of it and putting that $30,000 or so into a newer truck that doesn’t have any big impending failure coming

 

well, see my above post. I do think it seems like in the long run I would benefit financially more from investing in a truck that’s going to last longer right now. Even if I were to walk into a dealership and buy a new one today with zero mileage I can pay for it in cash, so interest on a long car note isn’t an issue. I’m just looking at total cost paid in the end for one scenario versus the other

 

My advice is go 2015 or 2014 if you really need a new truck. I've been in 3rd gens and by golly, I cannot stand the way they drive. Anyway, I wish you luck. Just take your time.

 

Bought my 2017 trd off road with 47K miles in oct 2019 for $33K. Came fully loaded with everything except leather for that price. I’ve put almost 40K miles without any issues so far. Good luck in your search and hope this info helped.

 

That's not bad these days. My local dealer is only getting a few basic optioned TRD OR's at a time. I think there's a shortage or constraint on LED's and tech packages. Newer used TRD OR's with 5k miles are selling for about 45-48k and 10-15k miles for about 38-40k at the same local dealer.

 

If one comes up as a deal be ready to fight for it. Someone else is wanting it to flip.

 

Kind of the problem with the new automarket, and vehicles just sit on the dealers lot with a mark up.

 

Don’t buy used right now, just go for new. In a lot of cases, new ones are cheaper than used ones. Only thing is, there’s usually a wait for a new one.

 

I bought my '22 in June and decided to buy new when I discovered the difference in pricing between new and used models was maybe a thousand dollars or two. Prices around here have not changed much in four months.

In essence, the used car market is haywire and it's going to take a while to unwind.

 

I bought my brand new 2019 TRD OR w/ leather, sunroof, all weather pkg & premium tech pkg for $36-ish in Feb 2019. It was a slow month at the dealership so they threw in a free season pass to the local ski resort w/ the purchase.

Funny thing is I sold my 2019 to a guy down the street from me for $37.5k in May of 2021 when vehicle shortages became an issue and ended up buying my FIL's 2014 TRD OR. Ended up using the profit from the sale of the 2019 to buy the 2014 cash & eliminated my vehicle loan. Worked out pretty well timing wise.

 

cars.com should give you a reasonable ideal of the market in your area.

 

You should expect to be able to find a new 2022 or 2023 for factory MSRP.

My 19 Sport 2wd I bought w/ 2k miles on it in April of 19 was $29.5. Largely the base Sport model with tow package and came with a Roll-n-lock bed cover (which I will never own a truck without one from now on BTW) and running boards. Now 3.5 years later and 25,500 miles. I actually ran a Carvana quote on it today and they want to give me $33.5 for it.

 

I'm selling mine soon. How much you looking to spend?

 

literally just got home from the local dealership where I was quoted $39,000 for this exact truck. $45,000 out the door. Negotiated them down to $42,000 before walking out. guess I need to call some different dealers
