Gear Whine after regearing

    A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more
    Rear only, front you shouldn't hear anything.

    I hear front when 4x4 is engaged. My 5.29's howl more and more it seems.

    Had Yukon 5.29's installed, same gear whine at 60 mph. Using Lucas 80w90 in the rear. Only about 1k on them so far, not sure if the noise is getting louder yet. Backlash was .008"

    My very slight whine type noise goes away completely when I carry a folded and packed pop-up cover (40 pounds????) laying against the right wheel well over the axle. Interesting.

    All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
    My gears began to whine…then the pitch changed to more of the sound of you rubbing your finger around a wine glass rim (holly balls it got real). I was using the suggest oil weight from ECGS.

    Took it back to the shop, they took the gears out, checked them out, reinstalled them; now the whine is much less noticeable. Still there, but different.

    Turn the music up and put some sound deadening in the cab. Now it is faint.

    Good morning.
    Have a question for the guys that regeared nitro 5.29….

    Long story short after the break in period, I replaced the front and rear diff fluid with AMSOIL
    $28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90. Wasn’t really thinking about it since this is the gear oil I always used on my diffs and had extra at home.

    But then a buddy of mine mentioned something about using “thicker oil” after the regear.

    Did I screw up and do I need to replace the diff oil again or am I ok with 75w-90?

    You didn't do anything wrong.
    $28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75W-90 is already higher viscosity than Toyota recommends.

    That said, I typically recommend 75W-90 front, 75W-110 in the rear in warmer places. I would say change the rear whenever you want - before next summer, at your leisure.

    It's been almost 3 years and many miles. Gear noise has been gone for a long time. It was a slight whine on decal. I haven't heard or thought about it in years. Would that be correctly installed? I'd think so

    Wow, didn’t realize this was so old.

    The shop set them up incorrectly. Your backlash was too tight. That’s what caused the whine. It also caused excess heat, which broke down your gear lube, which also increase the whine.

    You haven’t heard it lately because you either got used to it, or the gears finally ground themselves into a proper backlash. If you decide, off-road it already will probably break a pinion tooth.
