People complain about the cost of things as it is. I can't see anyone wanting to pay mor for something because it takes more time to complete the task.

We’re building the farm area rapid transit here in California that connects the middle of nowhere to the middle of nowhere so we can have high-speed rail across a fault line. The Japanese can figure it out, I’m sure our engineers are just as smart.

A lot of this stuff you're just making up. It just happened that lithium batteries were invented the decade cellphones were, the 70s

    upload_2022-10-11_16-38-53.jpg

I hope you're right. We need a battery that weighs at least 1/5 the current tech. That might be 10 years away or 200 years

Really? Where did you get lost?

The government is subsidizing EV car purchases in order to meet green standards and promote "clean energy".

The government would subsidize national EV/Mag Lev etc...high speed rail in order to meet green standards and promote "clean energy".

High speed rail and reliable public transit would be awesome. I’d much rather drive a short distance to a train station to go up to Denver or any of the other large cities I’ve lived near over the years and not deal with driving.

I don’t think many Americans want to ride trains. This country is too big and too spread out to make trains work. That’s why we have airplanes.

At the time there wasn't the consumer demand or need for Li-ion. You remember what cell phones looked like back then? Hell, my dad had one of the first ones that was a literal suitcase with a phone attached. As the need grew the technology evolved. Kind of the same thing that we're going to be seeing. The advances in battery technology are rapidly improving as the profit from unlocking new technologies makes significant more sense now.

Who in their right goddamn mind would spend 3-4 days traveling from coast to coast by train when it takes less than six hours by airplane? You would have to be literally insane.

Agreed. Cross country trains are a stretch but localized intercity high speed rail would be beneficial.

They screwed the pooch with that one. High speed rail from LA to the Bay Area direct made more sense without going to Bakersfield (I think).

I can't wait for the high-speed rail to Vegas from LA. That will make getting there and home way easier than sitting in the traffic.

Again you have to apply the same logic that you're using for the "future EVs will be so much better".

Focus some of those dollars on our rail system and the same thing would happen.

But we're too short sighted as a country and our politicians on both sides are corporate puppets.

Haha. People that don’t have trains think they are great. Those of us that have them think they suck. Come to Massachusetts and try out our trains.

Given our railways’ abysmal safety and maintenance record, you’re much safer on an aircraft.

Why would anyone be in favor of building high speed electric trains to meet green standards?

I guess the same could be applied to subsidies for clean energy EVs.

I don't think there is way to make a highspeed train an efficient way to get from DC to LA. Highspeed will still probably take days to accomplish by ground, is the train going to travel at 1000mph or higher?

    Edit

Low speed passenger trains can't even make some their routes right now, because freight cars are parked on the tracks they share.

High speed rail would probably be facing the same problem if they existed right now.
