When is rut there?

 

Well that’s a tricky subject considering there is Pre, main, and post rut . 3 phases . Here it’s usually around November 11 which is archery into the first week of rifle which is 3rd Saturday in November until around the 23rd . That’s when I see most rutting activity here . Warm weather will suppress the rut ,lots of factors. But most doe go into heat around the time I said .

Took the day off to fill my limited doe tag. This big ass fork had other plans!


By far the biggest coastal blacktail fork I have shot. A 4x4 walked out right after he fell, but his body was much smaller than the fork. Then a 3x2 walked by as I was packing him out. What an amazing day. Super thankful for this buck. The plan was to fill the doe tag first and hunt a big buck the other 4 weeks in the season. I guess I’m doing it backwards now

Anyone in here hunt from a saddle? I know it'll probably take some getting used to, and it is mostly comfortable, but whats the consensus on knee pads/knee rest when sitting? Do they actually help, make it worse, or you just get used to it?

 

I don’t, nor does it appeal to me. Saddle hunting is gaining popularity in certain areas and particularly on public land. Almost all land in my area is privately owned and hunted by either the landowner or leased to outfitters. By having private land you have the luxury of putting up as many stands as you want and leave them in place all season. I’ve seen guys on TV using saddles but I just don’t think it’s my cup of tea. I realize not all hunters have this option but I like being able to just walk to my stand and climb in making very little noise. I’m also 63 years old and pretty well set in my old ways.

I definitely get that. If I had it my way, I'd own my own big chunk of land, have permanent stands set everywhere, and do the same. I'm forced to be mobile though, and either on public or small residential "back yards" essentially. I really like my summit viper climber, and used it the last 2 years a good bit. I built out a saddle setup last year and used it a handful of times, and while it has its perks, it also has its disadvantages. The best way I could put it to someone, is its just a different type of tool for the job. I'd never say its a good replacement for any other setup - just another tool to do the same thing, a little differently. I do love it though; just haven't mastered it and found those perfect tether/bridge lengths and angles to make it as comfortable as everyone else says it is.
