I didn’t say it would be feasible, cheaper or likely to happen, just that I would like it if it did exist. I know public transit is a dead end in this country.

Just fuel since that is how the EPA measures their MPG/eMPG ratings.

Compared to my 3rd gen and assuming 12k miles per year the Rivian would save about $2k/year in fuel costs. The Tacoma cost $39k, Rivian will be $67k after tax credit so 14 years to break even. Obviously it’s not about saving money when buying one.

Then you toss in things like pandemics, do most people want to be that close to each other? Personal self driving vehicles make more sense to clear up congestion than rail.

I did it with an R1S at $100K, vs $39K Taco. Driving 20K/year.

What drives the annual operating cost for the Tacoma to 7.2k? Where is the depreciation ? Registration ? Insurance ?

And at what point or what year does one figure in the cost off battery replacement on the Rivian?

Do you still have to pay state/city sales tax after the federal tax break?

Not sure how you’re getting one OTD for $67K.

When I build out the truck with options that I like, it is $116,700 before tax credit and before sales tax, and registration.

You need to have an early preorder and access to the R1T Shop

Pre-order holder so mine is $74800 out the door because I have no state or city taxes and registration is only $115.

Assuming the battery pack lasts as claimed about the same time you start looking at an engine replacement in an ICE vehicle.

That does seem a bit extreme, I know mine never had an extra $3k in costs over fuel. Maybe a couple hundred a year in oil changes and basic maintenance yearly.

Well my '07 is nearing 250,000 miles and shows no sign of dieing. So you're thinking a battery pack will do the same? How about resale of a 15 year old Rivian with it's original battery pack? Who's going to end up having to buy the new battery pack at $20,000? I can certainly replace my engine for much less then that.

That's the long game that I worry about with all these new EV's coming out. The battery pack replacements are going to cost someone a boat load.

Posting for fun, but also to point out….Our world of Tacoma happiness includes the northern climate feature of unsuspecting Tacoma owners get to replace frames every 12 years for $15K or get to scrap their truck with all kinds of life left.

That’s how long mine made it. Thank you lawsuit settlement or my truck would be parted out 5 years ago.

These new ice melt chemicals destroy everything. I’m sure they will eventually destroy the Rivians too.

And it's gonna be way worse for rivian. The whole drivetrain will be right in the salt...

I don’t know if you are referring to magnesium chloride, but it’s not legal in every state.

In Colorado they make a hot slurry out of it and spray it from a tanker truck, it gets aerosolized and gets into every nook and cranny of your vehicle.

In California I think they’re only allowed to use sea salt and only in certain parts. I have seen plow trucks with salt spreaders on the grapevine outside of Los Angeles, but I’m not sure if they would actually use salt next to a lake.

There have been environmental impact studies on heavy use of road salt and how it destroys rivers and streams, but you know, people not dying on the highways is also a consideration.

Yes, they use that here. They spray it on the roads the day before the storms so your car gets coated even you stay home during the actual storm.
