    Hello friends,

My trucks been running rough since around my 10k service at first I thought it was maybe bad gas but I'm now at 15k and it's still the same. Anyways the other day I decided to pop the hood and found the breather hose that's pre throttle body valve was leaking more oil than I'd expect. Tbh I thought there wouldn't be any. I took it to the dealership it was there for a total of two days and they said nothing wrong all normal lol. My engine is kinda shaky at idle, rough acceleration, and then there's the engine oil concern. I know these engine have some strange characteristics but I personally feel like something's off. What do you guys think? PXL_20221011_033725546.jpg PXL_20221011_185559475.jpg PXL_20221011_185521888.jpg PXL_20221011_185827689.jpg

First things I'd look at is oil level and pcv valve. Could they have put too much oil in? That's assuming you didn't change it yourself.

That was my concern. Worried they way overfilled her and I drove 5k miles like that. My little brother thinks there's not much damage that would happen since it's such thin oil and synthetic. The problem is the dipstick is super hard to read. It does read a good amount over. I usually pull the stick, let the oil in the tube settle for like 5-10 minutes, then get my reading but it's always kinda inconsistent and reads over. I haven't picked up the truck yet would it be appropriate for me to ask them to verify the oil level in front of me via the dipstick? I already have zero trust in dealerships but since I can't even properly check the oil level it's a tough situation. Also what do you think about the first pic, normal or not?

Take the hit and drail the oil and filter. This way you will have piece of mind knowing exactly how much you put in vs the stick.
I took sandpaper on a diagonal to my dipstick but it is still hard to read.

They seem to not have been able to reproduce the issue. Take it to a different shop and help them to reproduce the issue. Describe it in detail.

Okay that's what I'm leaning towards. Tell me if this is a good plan. I'm gonna drain the oil and filter. Pull the pcv, breather lines and intake runner. Completely clean them all out. Reinstall them, and refill oil. Following that should I just do my own maintenance? I don't know if I can trust another dealership at this point tbh

Not trying to sound like a dick here but damn guys, is it really that hard to see the oil level on the dipstick?

Tilt it a bit so the oil hits light, it’s always accurate reading on one side only.

    Rant over.:)

I can read the stick just fine, it's that the dipstick tube always seems to have oil in it to varying degrees. I have to pull the stick and let the tube drain for 10min before getting what I believe is an accurate reading. Even then it's always over the 2nd indentation so I probably just have had lube techs overfilling my baby every time. Definitely a PITA.

Edit: now that I think about it it is still a little difficult to read the level because there are no cross hatches like I'm used to. The level just kinda seems all over the place

It actually is… this Tacoma dipstick plus super light colored and thin 0w20 is an epic bad combo. Prob the hardest to read of any of the 50+ cars I had… and it smears on the inside of the tube all the time

I dunno man, I have no issues whatsoever reading the dipstick. Is it harder to read then my previous vehicles? Yes, but just takes an extra few seconds.

Alright that's great man hopefully I'll have consistent readings after doing maintenance myself from here on out, but I started this thread to discuss what I should do not the difficulty in reading the dipstick. Would you agree that I should just drain the oil refill and clean out the hoses and intake?

Definitely. Drain and fill it with 6.2 quarts.

I would avoid dealer for oil/fluid changes at all costs.

Sorry didn’t mean to derail your thread.:)

Seems overfilled... Drain and measure how much you take out. If it's a little bit over not a big deal but overfilling your engine is not good no matter what viscosity it is. If its a lot over then maybe have a chat with whoever has done the oil changes.

You didn't really, think I'm just stuck between a rock and a hard place with this situation so I'm stressing.
