It's relatively simple. kWh in... kWh out.

Your ability to understand hinges on your ability to do math and to understand that a tank of gas is different than an electric battery though.

Actually EV energy consumption is very well documented and is a metric that is shown on EV dashboards just like MPG is on modern cars. Here’s a good article from Edmunds (the consumption is kilowatt-hours/100 miles):

While the total range of a vehicle continues to dominate the EV conversation, energy consumption is an important factor as well. In Rivian's case, it may be even more important, as the R1T is by far the least efficient EV we've tested yet. Energy consumption is what determines how much your miles will cost you. The unit of measurement for consumption, the kilowatt-hour, can be thought of as the EV equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. Just like gas, the price of electricity varies depending on where you live. For example, you'll pay about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour in Washington as of this writing, whereas in Hawaii it'll run you about 33 cents.

So, what can 2022 Rivian R1T owners expect to pay at "the pump"? After charging the battery back to full, which took about 23 hours and 30 minutes on our Level 2 charger, we calculated an Edmunds consumption rate of 46.9 kWh/100 miles, which is 2.3% more efficient than the EPA estimate of 48 kWh/100 miles. If we lived in Hawaii, our 317-mile trip in the R1T would have cost us $49.06, while if we lived in Washington, that same trip would cost just $14.87.

On the one hand, that's still a good deal compared to what typical trucks cost to refuel — a phenomenal deal on the lower end in Washington. But on the other hand, the Rivian's Edmunds consumption rate of 46.9 kWh/100 miles means it uses nearly 23% more energy per 100 miles than the next most power-hungry EV we've tested, the Audi e-tron Sportback, which clocked in at 38.2 kWh/100 miles. Considering that these two EVs cost about the same, here's how they would compare. That same 317 miles in the e-tron would have cost $39.96 in Hawaii and $12.11 in Washington. So you'd save yourself about $10 a "tank" with the e-tron in Hawaii, though you probably wouldn't notice the difference in Washington.

How about a gasoline-powered equivalent? Well, since the Rivian weighs as much as a heavy-duty truck but can outrun and out-handle even the smallest and nimblest of compact trucks, we're just going to stick with the crazy Ram 1500 TRX for this comparison. The TRX requires premium fuel and is estimated to return a laughable 12 mpg in combined driving. So driving it for 317 miles would have set us back $126.01 in Hawaii ($4.77 per gallon) and $112.54 in Washington ($4.26 per gallon) at current prices, assuming we got the TRX's 12 mpg combined.

Based on these numbers, you could save an estimated $2,714 per year in Hawaii and a whopping $3,168 per year in Washington by driving a Rivian R1T for 10,000 miles a year instead of the Hellcat-powered Ram. Not to mention, you'd still be faster than the TRX in nearly every scenario ("objects in the mirror are getting farther and farther away").

For more information on how we test EV range and how each vehicle performed, we invite you to visit our Real World vs. EPA testing page, which includes both our EV range leaderboard and a table with detailed test results. Our EV range leaderboard is embeddable and will automatically update every time we add a new vehicle.

Gasoline’s energy content is about 34 kilowatt-hours per gallon. The Rivian’s battery is 135 kw-h which is equivalent to 4 gallon gasoline tank, but it delivers a 314 mile range. My Tacoma would use about 15 gallons to go that far, and as the Edmunds article I cited above shows, a Ram TRX or Raptor, both of which are slower than the Rivian, would use far more energy. OK, I’m done with this efficiency thing.

hopefully the thing will last 14 years without needing a $20k battery replacement

Hopefully, though I highly doubt I will own it for 14 years and the break even cost is not a consideration in my purchase. I like fun toys although the smart financial choice would be if I still drove cheap beaters like I used to.

I'm piecing this together and from my understanding, which does not make sense so I'm probably wrong.

EV motors run off amprage that is supplied by the battery that stores kilowatts measured in kilowatt hours, and there's 34kwh of energy in a US gallon of gas?

Won't gasoline always be able to store more electrical energy than a battery?

The conversion of gasoline to usable energy is extremely inefficient. Only about 35% of the energy is used to actual power the vehicle, the rest is just wasted as excess heat.

As for electricity, the energy usage math is weird. The battery stores energy which is measured in kilowatts. Discharged electricity current is called amps and is a mathematical calculation based off the discharge voltage and wattage. Example, my trailer uses a 12v power source and the furnace consumes 60 watts when running or 5amps. Watts/volts = amps (current).

PHEVs - most of your drives are at the electric price, while you can refuel pretty darned good on the long runs.

For reasonable battery sizes, definitely. The energy density of gasoline is 46 MJ/kg. Lithium chemistries are 100-300 Wh/kg .. or ~ 1MJ/kg with generous assumptions.

    In no particular order:
Different refinery standards and additives and blends to minimize smog so our air doesn’t look like Beijing’s. Higher real estate prices; a mom and pop’s gas station has to pay more for the land that is comparatively free in other states. Dino oil corporations gouging the shit out of people. Additional transit and gas tax fees to help support a variety of mass transit and cleaner air initiatives. There are probably a couple of things I’m forgetting.

Im the type that likes to make things last. My truck is 13 years old now and in really good shape for its age And runs likes a top. I’m sure the rivian will have the same outcome mechanically, but if it’s running on the same battery then the range will be different. Which sucks for people like me who like to keep things working/looking like it’s new

I think you’re just getting ripped off. Real estate is expensive here in MA too and our gas is $3.50.

No disagreement there. Seems like we’ll end up going toward this electric destiny. Then electricity costs will go up. Then we’ll….keep paying out of the nose!

Still, seems lit a lot for a truck that can’t haul or tow much…man keeping up up with fashion taint cheap.

Nothing to do with fashion, just something fun to try out and see if I like the concept with a low financial risk involved. It fits the bill for me - fast, fun, comfortable, tows, hauls, offroads, etc and has the range to do everything I normally do in a week without issue.

After the tax credit I will have $67000 in it and be able to sell it for an easy $20k profit if I want.

Go for it, no need to stick around if you don’t want to be here. I have the money to buy things I will enjoy, whether that’s the latest greatest new cool thing or my 50 year old beater sailboat. If I can afford to buy it without hurting my retirement or savings funds contributions then I will. That’s the beauty of being in a place where I don’t have to drive a $800 beater like I did for many, many years.

For those interested in how the Rivian is built and the design considerations and decisions the company made there are some good videos on YouTube. Cool to see the breakdown of the entire truck from an outsider and not just a fan video raving about how great it is for views.
