I have a TRD Off Road, and honestly I think a V6 SR5 would suit most of us. I do like crawl control, and the locker has helped me once or twice, but I prolly shouldnt have been there in the first place! Just my thoughts, both are nice trucks though :)

Unless the main objective is to hit up some rough trails, SR5 is just fine.

Locker is needed in pretty rough scenarios, where most Tacoma drivers don’t go.

Unless you are really piling on options, the MSRP is a little under 2 Grand difference between the SR5 and Sport/Off Road.

When I got my 2g I was dead set on an OR, but I ended up getting a regular cab. It felt more like a Toyota to me. I still wouldn't mind having the 4.0 and a rear locker in it, and the 6 speed manual.

People have brought up a lot of good points, one I did not see mention is lighting. If you like or want LEDs, any TRD is the way to go. If you’re good with halogen then SR5 is fine but they are tricky to upgrade to. That’s an expensive upgrade anyways but if it’s desired, the SR5 is kind of the wrong truck to start with. That’s just one aspect though and many don’t care about LEDs (though I do really like them on mine after having halogens first).

Access cab OR MSRP is a little over 40 Grand with LED headlights SR5 MSRP is around 37 Grand. It's the market adjustment that throws the whole thing off.

LEDs are on the verge of necessity with my aging eyes and not awesome night vision.

Not sure what you’re asking. 2020+ TRDs could have LEDs and many did but plenty did not. SR5s did not and they are wired differently with the amber turn signal DRL so they are tricky bastards to upgrade later. The TRD is easy to upgrade with a simple wire harness if the truck came with halogens.

In that case I’d consider a TRD OR or Sport. There are plenty of them with the LEDs out there, although you may have to buy a few extras that come along with them in the package.

when I got my OR I was bummed I didn’t get a sport because I thought it would better suit my needs. Honestly I’m glad I got an OR simply for the cushier suspension. It soaks up jolts better.

It is easy to compare trims on Toyota's website. The TRD models have more features like blinkers in the mirrors. The SR trim can be optioned up similar capabilities. Knowing what I know after 6 years of ownership I would buy my TRD sport again. I still get "nice truck" compliments.

This. Upgrading to LED Headlights on amn SR5 is expensive. But oh so worth it in the end

It’s expensive to upgrade a TRD also but at least it’s easy. The SR5 gets a bit weird and the results from the harness that Puppy punter, Dave and the other guys have worked to come up with seem to have iffy results. Sadly it can’t be a simple wiring change like the TRDs. But agreed the LEDs are definitely worth whatever it takes to get to them unless you need heat on the lens in the winter like bulbs provide.

Morimotos were a 100% plug and play install. But if you want oem leds, you need a special harness made by literally one guy @Puppypunter

Im happy with my SR5, it does great on the trails too. The stock tires are however, completely crap so you’ll want to change those out

Yeah the market adjustment stuff is total BS.
    MSRP
    2022 AC V6 4x4
    SR5 $35,825 - OR $37,470

    2022 DCSB V6 4x4

I believe the rear end is a bit larger on the TRD OR and PRO as well. 8.75 vs 8 on the sport and SR/SR5. (basically if it has a locker it has an 8.75)

SR5 trim level and up come with the power adjustable drivers seat if that's important to you. It was to me so my shorter wife could drive it as well when looking at Tacoma's in 2020. It was a huge consideration. I would have been happy with a SR5 back then but the power drivers seat was only available on the TRD trims back in 2020.

Also, I'm hoping this is my last truck before retirement so I threw caution to the wind and spent the extra on a DCLB TRD Sport trim. I regularly get compliments still after 2 years of ownership. I appreciate the sport suspension for highway driving and long road trips. Our cabin is 5.5 hrs away through 2 mountain passes. Mine is a daily driver as well. For my off road use it's awesome. Meets my needs of exploring Forest Service Roads, snow storms and extreme rain events. My second Toyota truck and the wife and I both love it.

The Sport MT also gets the larger rear diff, as did the SR MT in 2016 and 2017 when it was available.
