the second page is confusing though...

i don't see a 1GR for 2011 Tacoma, but i see one for 2011 Tundra, and it says 0/20 and 10k miles. My 2011 Tacoma came with 5/30...so they are saying that the engine that came in my Tacoma has different clearances or operating parameters than the one in the Tundra, ones that allow it to run lighter oil and go longer on the intervals, even though it is the same engine and same year? according to the first page that is what you are left to infer. strange.

 

From Toyota motor co. 2011Toyota tacoma oil change interval changed to 10,000 miles. Use 0w20 Mobile1 synthetic oil. Advanced fuel economy green label. 4 cyl engine.

 

Essentially, this doc says if you use your truck as a truck to stay with 5w-30 and 5k OCIs. If you use your truck as a car, go for 0w-20 and better mileage.

 

I am about to hit 1k miles on my V6 4x4 access cab and going to change it then to 5w-30 castrol GTX with a NAPA 3148 filter...I always like doing the first oil change early to help get all the chips out of the engine. I normally run engines way past the 200k mark without issues.

Does the Dealership use full Synthetic oil? I plan on changing mine at a 1,000 miles too..

I am puzzled by that also..if you have a 2011 tundra, forerunner or FJ Cruiser with a 1GR engine, you can run 0/20 synthetic for 10k. But if you have a 2011 Tacoma with the same engine you have to change every 5000 with 5/30? Did they forget they made 2011 tacomas with that engine?

 

Maybe it is simply the amount of oil capacity? Man, I really want to try it, though, just to see the difference in fuel usage.

No......switching between conventional and synthetic will hurt nothing

 

Shouldn't be a problem. You probably want to stick with the same brand of oil if you can, just to minimize the chance of different additive packages reacting (which is small anyway). Some oils are blended conventional and synthetic so the manufacturers don't think it's a problem.

Anyway....what engine do you have?

 

4.0 with a 6 speed and u know bring the rpms up high every so often

 

Just stick with a 5w-30 and filter of your choice....synthetic or conventional and you'll be fine. Personally I change mine at 5k intervals.

Odds are this thread will turn into this like all oil threads do. That's why I posted the link to bobistheoilguy site. Lots of great info.
