The 2022 Silverado 2.7 turbo 4 cylinder has 350-400 ft lbs between 1500 and 5000 RPM.
I bet Toyota 2.3 will be less overall, but still a lot of torque available through the useable RPM range. Exactly what a daily driven truck needs. The Boy Racers will whine..but they always do.

The same engine going in the new Tacoma is most likely the one being used in the 2023 toyota highlander. There should be reviews coming pretty soon with first drives so it will be interesting to see how it drives in the highlander platform, atleast compared to the previous 3.5 v6.

FWIW? My Rav4 Prime 50-75 time is 3.8s ... and butt-feel on it is that there's plenty of power at that speed. Electrics don't actually need a second gear or lose much until about 80+mph.

Here is the first drive of the 2023 Highlander with the same powertrain:

I can't see Toyota placing the same 2.4t in the 6th gen 4Runner. The Highlander probably isn't on the light side and the BOF 4R will weigh a noticeably amount more.

I'm still skeptical the 2.4t will show up in the new Tacoma. Ford makes due with the 2.3t in the current Ranger, but Toyota isn't Ford.

Maybe the lower trim trucks get the 2.4, and TRDs get something larger, or a high out put version of the 2.4t, but it's Toyota.

I think Toyota is ditching the large PCD hubs on the 4th gen, so it will already be less of a Toyota 4x4 than any Toyota truck that has been built before.

Edit: people compare the Highlander with the Traverse? Yeah they are both midsize utes, but the Traverse is a larger vehicle than a Highlander.

I think the new Tacoma will get the 2.4t as its base engine and the Hybrid Max system being used in the Crown. I suppose the latter could be restricted to TRD packages. Surprised more info has not dribbled out yet.

It’s still funny to me that people are complaining about a 2.4 turbo being a power train option in the new Tacoma. I had a full size Sierra with the 2.7 4cyl turbo and it was crazy fast, especially in altitude where I live. It also towed awesome because of how low in the rpm band the turbo would come on. I can only imagine how awesome that kind of torque would be in a midsize truck. As far as reliability, we can only hope some lessons have been learned from the Tundra wastegate fiasco, but if you look at F150’s, the 3.5 Ecoboost is actually pretty darn reliable nowadays (everything else on the truck is questionable) so I see no reason why Toyota can’t produce an equally or more reliable motor than Ford.

If Toyota can pair the right transmission with a turbo 4. The Tacoma could be plenty powerful, I don't think Toyota will deliver when it comes to that, and the engine will probably be heavily detuned. This seems to be Toyota's truck building MO.

The aftermarket for this truck is going to be busy, as I don't see any 3rd 2nd or 1st gen parts carrying over to the new platform.

My issue isn't power or engine size, it's tradeoffs in long-term reliability. For example, anywhere you see a turbo DI you see fuel dilution issues. Look at the CRV nightmare, it's also prevalent in the 2.3 rangers, etc. This is only one example. NA will always be more reliable.

Apparently it sounds wheezy according to Motor Trends recent review of the Highlander.

Add some hybrid boost to it and it may work......

I would argue to the contrary; yes, there are some fuel dilution issues with the Honda turbo-4s, however, Mazda and VW have no such issues. Over the years I've had a number of turbo cars and even more non-turbo cars; so far at least, I've never had an issue with the turbo cars which seemed to impact longevity; that said, you cannot go 25,000 miles per oil change on a turbocharged engine, absolute recipe for disaster.

Wow anyone else depressed after reading that article lol. I’ve heard of cars that are sleepers but gimme a break. It’s one thing if my mileage is up 6 or 8 mpg but 1? And that probably if you have only one person in the car. What’s waste. These aren’t meant to be fast if I want that I’ll get my s2000 or Shelby Mustang back. Good for me though the lime pro should be shooting up like and Fj cruiser trail edition in a few years especially with a manual.

I think the next 4R is going to be like the next Tacoma and share the Tundra Platform so expect they both will be heavier.

Not too concerned about the truck being fast but would absolutely love proper torque where it's supposed to be in the power band, and if a turbo four provides that, I'll buy into it. I frequently wind my 3.5 out past 4500rpm to take advantage of the torque while towing, but it'd be cooler if I didn't have to.

Having driven the current generation Ranger, that engine is much better feeling to drive than our Tacomas. Unfortunately, the Ranger is significantly underwhelming in every other metric (that's not numbers on a spec sheet, I suppose).

Oh there will be some mods all right
My outback also had pretty bad fuel dilution. I was changing my oil at 3,000 miles and even then it smelled terrible and was super watery.

I had an MK7 GTI. I didn't have it long enough to care, but I did occasionally notice gas smell on the stick. There is reference to dilution on VW boards, but admittedly not as much as some other makes. That could just be because thats a smaller community though.

Yes a shared platform that is heavier. I suspect there won't be a 6th gen 4Runner. I think there will only be a Lexus GX version for the US. I'll have to wait and see how that plays out.

Right now with state of the economy today. I think the current 3rd gen Tacoma, and 5th gen 4Runner are going to be around another 5 years until 2028.

I can't see Toyota spending the money on retooling the plants in Mexico, not in today's economy. Toyota might discontinue the 4Runner altogether if it's sales continue to decline in NA, and abroad.

Everything I've read is that the 6th gen (2024) 4Runner is absolutely happening in North America. It will release around the same time as the 4th gen (2024) Tacoma and will likely have the same powertrain. 4th gen Tacoma test mules are all over the place, so that release is imminent.

I'm guessing the transmission is going to be the same 8 speed used in the highlander with different gear ratios etc.

I definitely like the numbers compared to the 3.5. I'd take the slightly lower hp and more torque any day of the week. The question is going to be how is it going to perform in the real world with the added weight of the tacoma, using it for truck duties. Also what the long term reliability will be.

My guess is toyota will get it all straightened out, their reputation is on the line and this engine is going to be put in multiple vehicles.
