Tacoma Vs. Rivian

Just like this brand new Tesla with temp tags in my neighborhood the other night. Didn’t quite make it home. lol

 

I'd love to do a comparison of cost per pound of capability but I just don't have the time to look up the price of the competition when properly equipped for max payload and/or max towing (not always the same trim).

R1T: payload = 1,760 lbs, towing = 11,000 lbs
Tacoma: payload = 1,685 lbs, towing = 6,800 lbs
Tundra: payload = 1,885 lbs, towing = 12,000 lbs
F150: payload = 2,388 lbs, towing = 11,300 lbs
Silverado 1500: payload = 2,300 lbs, towing = 13,300 lbs
Ram 1500: payload = 2,335 lbs, towing = 12,750 lbs
Gladiator: payload = 1,200 lbs, towing = 7,650 lbs
Ranger: payload = 1,860 lbs, towing = 7,500 lbs

Keep in mind it's only slightly larger than the Gladiator/Ranger, but about a foot smaller than the half tons in every dimension so comparing it to the capabilities of the half tons isn't apples to apples. Also keep in mind it's not hard to equip any of the competition to be in the ballpark price of the R1T. There's no arguing that under max towing load the Rivian will have worsened range, but keep in mind anything towing will not get the full range they're rated for. My post here is not to argue the ease with which it can tow long distances, but simply to highlight that it's really not "a lot for a truck that can't haul or tow much".

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate: MSRP $81,900
2022 Tundra Capstone: MSRP $73,530
2022 Gladiator High Altitude: MSRP $66,085
2022 Ram 1500 Limited: MSRP $60,035

The R1T has an even stronger argument for the people with reservations at the original $67,500 price. Let's not ignore the fact that you've got 2-4 times more power in the R1T than any of these. Towing your trailer merging onto the freeway, going uphill, is laughably easy with an EV.

I like the concept of 4wheel steering, 1st gen Siverado, and 2nd gen Sierra 1500 had 4 wheel steering as an option on certain year trucks, and cancelled the option, as GM stated people didn't want that feature.

Might have been an option on 2500, thought I saw a 3/4 ton GM pick up with 4wheel steering before.

Other than trying to tow a traller across soft ground, and I don't know why anyone would want to do that anyway. The shortest wheel base medium duty tractor you can buy would probably be a better option than the GMC Hummer to tow that boat.

Tesla added it to Cybertruck after the introduction because of Hummer EV getting it.

 

It might have been a burb that I saw, because I didn't think quadra steer was available on the 2500, until I saw one.

 

I wouldn’t want it. It’s just a ton more parts to break. I don’t find it that inconvenient to make a 3 point turn occasionally.

I still want the F150 lightening. I don't tow very often. But I do haul stuff in the back of my tacoma

 

Lightning is terrible when towing... But if you are hauling light stuff around, should be okay... I would do a crap ton of research about ev trucks before you spend 80k+
I would never get an EV truck to use as a truck... the tech is not even close to where it needs to be to compare

 

just about anything is terrible with towing. Its just one is currently easier to go from 0 range to full range.


Id prefer the base model lightening, they just dont offer it to non fleet buyers with the largest battery

Towing less than 150 miles I’d take an EV truck any day over a Tacoma. The EVs do it very, very well with the exception of limited range.

 

The way better driving experience of an EV is constantly overlooked in favor of driving for 4-6 hours at a time.

 

god ive never been able to get behind the looks of the rivian the headlights look like a dyson fan

 

$80K for an F150 is now normal. I don’t like this new world.
